issue 171 intellectual interests

ISSUE 171 "People who pursue their own intellectual interests for purely personal reasons are more likely to benefit the rest of the world than people who try to act for the public good."

Large number of science advances and amazing creations coming from the intellectuals ' persistent pursuit purely by their interests have greatly accelerated the development of our society. But it is not mean that people who pursue their own intellectual interests for purely personal reasons are more likely to benefit the rest of the world than people who try to act for the public good. The soaring ambition and commitment of acting for the public is another resource inspiring thousands of intellectuals, which play as much significant role as the intellectual interest, if not more.

Admittedly, the interests though for purely personal reasons do have contributed a lot to the eventual benefits of the others. To paraphrase a famous educator:" interests are best teachers " To a great extent, interest is fuel for one's exhaustive study and researches. It turns magically what we may feel tedious into "apple pies” for these who are interest in it. In many cases, It is the very intellectual interest on a certain subject and hard work based on it that incubate lots of great inventions, innovative ideas, that benefit millions of people, and still influence our current lives, ranking from Watt's interests in steam, to Newton’s in the falling apples.

It is too early to say all kinds of intellectuals’ interests can benefit the world, however. Recently has the genetic colon become a hot issue again, which is ignited by a piece of shocking news. A group of scientist who are interested in human colon (a disputable genetics branch) declared in Britain that they will go deeper research on the clone technology of man, and at last produce first colon man, disregarding the fierce oppose of media, administration, and most scholars. Researches on this area, firmly believed by the general, may bring lots of serious social problems, and challenge the traditional value of the contemporary society. Whether it could benefit or do harm to human beings is still on discussion, and the majority incline to see it as a monster, which would bring tremendous disasters to human beings. From this point, it is convincing to argue that, not all intellectual interests can benefit the rest of the word. Whether to do harm or to benefit is partly depending on the obligation of intellectuals, as well as what realms their interests lie in.

The interest in certain subject is not absolutely exclusive of the ambitions of trying to act for the rest of world. Interests can either come innately or by cultivation.  More often than not, certain kind of interest is just come from one’s great ambition to benefit his or her country, from the enthusiasm to shoulder social burdens. For example, Luxun, a well-known writer in china, once a doctor, selected his interests in writing to awake the sleeping spirit of Chinese, after he saw and experienced the weakness and numbness of Chinese people. His interest in writing to a great part came from his resolution to save his country from poverty, impotence. His success rooted from his try to act for pubic good.

In a sum, the interests in certain field and the tries to act for public good are both probably benefit the rest of the world. It is the process rather than the motivation that determines the results.
