issue94 "true education",欢迎斧正,谢谢!

Issue 94 "Universities should require every student to take a variety of course outside the student's field of study because acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated."

I fundamentally agree with the statement that students must take various courses outside the student's discipline so that the students can be truly educated. A contrary position would reflect a too-narrow view of higher education and its proper objectives. Nevertheless, I would caution that extending the proposition too far might risk undermining those objectives.

The primary reason that students should take various courses is that the students should become well-rounded. Well-rounded students are not only familiar with their own discipline, but also have a general idea about other fields. First of all, no matter which fields you are in, the basic skills such as oral and written communication, logical thinking, creative problem-solving and computer literacy are needed. You cannot learn all of them in only one discipline. Secondly, the study of course in other discipline may benefit the study of their own majors For example, if your major is politics science, knowledge in history, philosophy and sociology is essential for various academic discipline are inter related. In addition, by exploring subjects outside their own major, students may find new academic fields where their real interest and potential gift lie.

Another main reason is that the true education does not only prepare a student to have some life skills to live in the society, but also help them maintain their culture identity. Every country has its own culture. For instance, democracy and freedom are characteristic of our country. Therefore, the education should be as a means of transmitting democratic values, creating equality of opportunity, and preparing new generations of citizens to function in society. However, the education cannot achieve this purpose until the students study various courses in different discipline. If a chemistry major student studies only concentrate on his major and he knows nothing about the history of our nation, it is the failure of our education.

Nevertheless, the call that student should take various courses comes with a caveat. It is the success of our education when the graduates are proficient in one field and know a little about other fields. The student who only dabbles in lots of disciplines, without special emphasis on any one becomes a dilettante, lacking enough knowledge or experience in any single area to offer valuable things. Therefore, in the pursuit of true education, students must be careful not to overextend themselves.

In the finial analysis, we should make balance between a major field and multiple minor fields for the true education. The student should concentrate on his major and learn something outside his discipline to become well-rounded.

(我感觉这里说的很不令人信服,为什么不能呢?)Secondly, the study of course in other discipline may benefit the study of their own majors For example, if your major is politics science, knowledge in history, philosophy and sociology is essential for various academic discipline are inter related(这就话我没看明白:)). In addition, by exploring subjects outside their own major, students may find new academic fields where their real interest and potential gift lie.

If a chemistry major student studies only concentrate on his major and he knows nothing about the history of our nation, (我觉得这个太极端了)it is the failure of our education.

总体来讲 我觉得这一段的论证比较牵强.感觉每句话之间的关系,不是很和逻辑

Nevertheless, the call(觉得有点别扭) that student should take various courses comes with a caveat( caution就行了吧). It is the success of our education when the graduates are proficient in one field and know a little about other fields. The student who only dabbles in lots of disciplines, without special emphasis on any one becomes a dilettante, lacking enough knowledge or experience in any single area to offer valuable things. 我的水平很差,只能说这么多 仅供参考:)

First of all, no matter which fields you are in, the basic skills such as oral and written communication, logical thinking, creative problem-solving and computer literacy are needed. You cannot learn (teach) all of them in only one discipline. Secondly, the study of course in other discipline may benefit the study of their own majors For example, if your major is politics science, knowledge in history, philosophy and sociology is essential for various academic discipline are inter (inner) related. In addition, by exploring subjects outside their own major, students may find new academic fields where their real interest and potential gift lie.

Another main reason is that the true education does not only prepare a student to have some life skills to live in the society (does not only prepare a student some skills to live in the society 可能更好), but also help them maintain their culture identity. If a chemistry major student studies only concentrate (concentrating) on his major and he ( he 可以省掉) knows nothing about the history of our nation, it is the failure of our education.

Nevertheless, the call that student should take various courses comes with a caveat. It is the success of our education when the graduates are proficient in one field and know a little (in a specific field with wide knowledge of other fields) about other fields. The student who only dabbles in lots of disciplines, without special emphasis on any one becomes a dilettante, lacking enough knowledge or experience in any single area to offer valuable things. Therefore, in the pursuit of true education, students must be careful not to overextend themselves.

谢谢大家!汲取大家的精华,我打算把another main reason 一段删去,改为如下。也就是增加了一个具体的例子

In addition, by exploring subjects outside their own major, students may find new academic fields where their real interest and potential gift lie. Our department head, Professor Roderick Wong, is a famous mathematician now. However, he got his bachelor degree in business. He took some mathematics courses when he was an undergraduate. From then on, he found the beauty of mathematics and his gift in mathematics. Then he pursued a PhD degree in mathematics and began his academic life. So he always encourages us to try diverse courses in different discipline.
