Issue62 Self-improvement vs perfectionism

62
"The widespread idea that people should make self-improvement a primary goal in their lives is problematic because it assumes that people are intrinsically deficient."
------------------------------
21:14
------------------------------
Human, unlike God, is never perfect. This truth leads two opposing view of life: To a pessimist, it sounds like a death sentence since no effect will set an end to the problems stemmed from human nature; to an optimist, on the contrary, life will continually offer surprises of new progresses and discoveries. Comparing the two kinds of people, we can obviously decide which view is more advisable.

Human history has proven it by showing us our ancestors, however great they might be, had equally (if not more) evident short points. Just take Ford, the inventor of assembly line, for example. He keenly discovered the fact that when workers only repeated simple actions, their productivity would rise significantly. He then successfully turned workers into impersonal cogs of his car factories and became one of the most preeminent entrepreneurs in the history. Yet the impersonalization in turn rigidified his mind. He said whatever color the customers needed, his corporation would only produce one, that is, black. Later, other car manufacturers outpaced Ford by providing colorful cars. Undoubtedly, similar stories will continue to take place in the future.

To be perfect (in other words, to eliminate all deficiencies and weaknesses) is unachievable. Some may argue that we can find prevention to every mistake by deficiency, and thus avoid all mistakes and make perfect beings. In the Ford story, one may suggest that if Ford could keep an up-to-date overview of his industry and market, say, just like Jack Welch, he would realize the needs of colors brought both challenges and opportunities. Such imagination makes no sense, though. if Ford had accepted the truth about personalization in customer demands, he would be too self-contradicting to remain one identical man.

In fact, while some virtues can almost completely overcome some deficiencies, other flaws, nevertheless, are just the shadows of due advantages cast by the light of complex reality. A brave (on some occasions) person may be bold (in other cases); a serious person, inhumorous; prudential, indecisive; straightforward, offensive. When the background changes as time goes, an advantage may come to its opposite. For this reason, it is unwise to pursue absolute perfection that does not exist at all.

After all, hopefully and fortunately, we still can improve ourselves gradually and persistently. Three steps can be taken iteratively, on and on. Firstly, we can foster our advantage; secondly, reinforce them; and finally, reconcile our conflicting advantages, such as bravery and prudence. Then we can go on to develop new ones and hence start another progress loop. These self-improvements keep adding favorable physical and spiritual wealth to us. Moreover, if we create a nice spiral of such advances, we can always anticipate a better tomorrow and thus lead a optimistic and happy life.

Human, unlike God, is never perfect. This truth leads (应该是了leads to吧?lead是vi)two opposing view of life: To a pessimist, it sounds like a death sentence since no effect will set an end to the problems stemmed from human nature(这里好像不通); On the contrary, (to an optimist), life will continually offer surprises(这里有pl吗?) of new progresses and discoveries. Comparing the two kinds of people, we can obviously decide which view is more advisable.

Human history has proven it by showing us our ancestors, however great they might be, had equally (if not more) evident short points. Just take Ford, the inventor of assembly line, for example. After all, hopefully and fortunately, we still can improve ourselves gradually and persistently. Three steps can be taken iteratively, on and on(请教一下什么意思啊?). Firstly, we can foster our advantage; secondly, reinforce them; and finally, reconcile our conflicting advantages, such as bravery and prudence. Then we can go on to develop new ones(这里代表什么? we ? )  and hence start another progress loop. These self-improvements keep adding favorable physical and spiritual wealth to us. Moreover, if we create a nice spiral of such advances, we can always anticipate a better tomorrow and thus lead(可以当vt?) a (an)optimistic and happy life.

Sigh...
