Issue 52 "Education encourages students to question and criticize, and therefore does little to promote social harmony."

Walking through the columns in Greece, you can easily recall the fierce debate between Socrates and his disciples hundred years ago. The time when one wears a piece of cloth to cover his body has long past. However, students of the information era are still encouraged to questioning and criticizing. Critical thinking is a path to intellectual adventure and the incentives to innovation.

Compared to these merits, critical thinking is declaimed as it does little to promote social harmony. People who support this notion probably regard social harmony as people’s consensus or the popular agreement on one theory, one belief, one opinion, etc. It might seem reasonable at first glance, but for a second consideration, one will find how ridiculous it is. In Iraq, Saddam won his election by 100 percent support while George W Bush beat Gore and gained the narrow victory only be 4 vote in the Electoral College. Does that mean Iraq is more harmonious than America in the election aspect? So I would like to define social harmony as the co-existence and balance of different attitudes and thoughts towards the same issue

Critical thinking contributes a lot to promote social harmony. Questioning the already accepted knowledge produce different views and thoughts, among which might be one more close to truth. Every age has its arbiters and popular agreement. However, is it possible that whatever the arbiter thinks or the majority favors is correct? There is time when most people believed that the earth was flat and square, only Columbus put a question mark to it. By sailing around the earth, he proved that the earth is round like a ball. During the pursuit of truth, the chance is high that different ideas exist and conflict to each other. Obviously, questioning and revising is the path to truth and the way to stop people quarreling about the true-looking statement.

Moreover, except critical thinking, education also make people become tolerant to others’ believes and opinion. Doubtlessly, tolerance is the company of critical thinking. When one is on the way to strongly criticize others’ views and announces his the best one, tolerance could instantly lend a hand to help him out of arbitrariness and narrowness. In other words, tolerance can prevent critical thinking from going to extremes and therefore strengthen social harmony.

To sum up , it is advisable for the students to criticize and challenge the information they are told of, which both adds to and sustain the diversity of the society. Similarly, tolerance--the moral values education implant into the students—substantiate this diversity. In all , this two elements greatly promote social harmony.

The beginning of your essay is originative, however,  sentence like "The time when one wears a piece of cloth to cover his body has long past." is kinda funny.   The serious problem is that you haven't mention a word about soical harmony, the key words, in your thesis.

This third para is also weak, because you digress to another point that critical thinking contributes to truth, whereas overlooking the relationship between critical thinking and social harmony.

Moroever, in the conluding part, you still fail to elucidate the relationship, instead, the first sentence mentions " diversity" , which hasn't been discussed before. Therefore you essy lacks coherece and a correct understand of the topic, in my opinion

谢谢
我的第三段是基于这个这样的想法,主题说教育教人critical thinking 影响social harmony. 我意思是教育从其他角度可以有助于social harmony

the central idea of second part is about the attitude of question is good to the social harmony, however it seems that the example about Clumbus' discovery dost not give well-support.

My opinion:

Without the spirits and attitude of question and criticize, it is not necessary good to keep the social harmony

to compromise and submissive the falsehood is the root of social convulsion.
