In order for any work of art—whether film, literature, sculpture or a song—to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.

The purpose of art is the hub of controversies throughout human civilization. Some artists and critics advocate the work of art is aimed at satisfying majority, understandable according to secular taste, while some adhere the cover of distance between daily life and the sphere of art can be detrimental to art itself. As far as I am concerned, neither flirting with fame indiscriminatingly nor ignoring popular trends for artistic own sake could be employed for any forms of art.

Art, whether visual or auditory, could fall to two types, of which are pop art and abstruse one. When comes to music, there must be either pop music or classical music, differentiating in their target markets. So is the case with film. Hollywood movies are characterized with commercialization and extraordinary visual effects, which although exceptions occur sometimes, fascinate audiences most and earn a lot of money for film producers. However, such movies are proved to be quite pale and vague in their genre and ideas. Those “nonmainstream” movies, on the contrary, either contained profound philosophy or creativity in their structure and episodes. Of course, not so welcome to most of audiences, even dull them. Nevertheless, two types coexist and thrive harmoniously ever since the birth of art.

The understandability manifests the economic foundation of art. Practically, artists are no saints or gods that without funds their creativity and inspiration would become unutterable fantasies in their mind. This is easy to understand. How can a painter strike a masterpiece without the attendance of brush? Granted he is able to come up with funds for brush, if not enough for exhibition, his works would still retain unknown. Of course, he could appreciate himself. But noted that the creation of art is not a process of purely inspiration but accountable for nutrition from other sects and artists, the lack of funds would deprive of artists’ opportunity of knowing other works as well as being known. Therefore, the importance of financial support is self- evident.

On the other hand, if an artist aims only to flatter populace for reputation, he would, therefore, inevitably lost himself in expressing the deepest and most valuable point of his heart. He submits most popular fashion, satisfying both audiences and critics, finally vanishing his indignity and responsibility as an artist. As for any forms of art, is to convey beauty, sublime human thoughts, rather than to make genetic products in assembly line. My favorite director Steven Spielberg certainly sets a classic example for artists to balance the basic demands for finance and the maintenance of art’s duty. Most his films are understandable to populace yet also winking out some philosophic concern, such as Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan, which established sustained characters.

In sum, from where I stand, an excellent work of art should be all like this: to have merit not only to our eyeballs and ears, but also to our soul.
