argument14 我的第一篇argument

The following appeared as part of an article in a business magazine.
“A recent study rating 300 male and female advertising executives according to the average number of hours they sleep per night showed ad association between the amount of sleep the executives need and the success of their firms. Of the advertising firms studied, those whose executives reported needing no more than 6 hours of sleep per night had higher profit margins and faster growth. These results suggest that if a business wants to prosper, it should hire only people who need less than 6 hours of sleep per night”

While it may be true that the success of a company has to with the amount of sleep its executive needs, the author’s argument is rife with several holes and assumptions, such as whether the 300 people are fully representative, whether there would be other reasons that coerce executives sleep less than 6 hours per day, or whether the advertising company can represent all different companies and so on. We just do not know. Therefore, this argument is not strong enough to give rise to the conclusion that hiring people who need less than 6 hours of sleep per night would businesses prosper more easily.

Firstly, the scope, validity and authority of this study are not clear. For example, The 300 people may not fully represent all executives in the nation. Also whether the survey select them strictly according to the principal of sampling investigation or whether the design of the ratio of males and females could satisfy the real ratio of men and women in the companies is a puzzle. And the objectivity of the organization conducting may not be warranted, being influence by some certain industries, individuals and so on. We just do not know. If these assumptions cannot be verified, the author’s argument is unworthy believing.

In addition, the author implies that the people that sleep less than 6 hours per night lead to the prosperity of a company. However, there might be other reasons that the executives sleep less. For instance, the heavy works make them sleep less. In other words, they have to work into late night to finish a great number of businesses and thereby bringing higher profits for companies. Similarly, the stringent rules in the companies could make them work hard in order to acquire high earnings for companies. If so, these advertising companies’ high profit is the outgrowth of rigid management rather than the suppressed sleeping time. To strength his argument, the author would benefit from conducting a comprehensive survey considering a wider range of questions about why the executives sleep less.

Finally, the assertion that if a company desires to flourish, it should recruit people who need less sleep is unbelievable since it lets the conclusion that also is filled with doubts in the advertising businesses apply all other different areas. This is really not feasibly because every area has its own elements that make it succeed.

Obviously, less sleep of the executives is not likely or necessary to promote companies’ prosperity.
