The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
------正文------
Can the greatness of individuals be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries, just as the speaker contends? I strongly doubt this claim. In my point of view, Whether the greatness of individuals can be recognized are intrically complicate, depending on a plenty of factors, which involve the cognition level and knowledge of the society compared to the individual's contribution, the democracy of the society the man lived in, and the background of that person.

In many academic fields, it takes many decades even many century to testify the correctness of validity of theories, works and ideas. Their greatness can not be appreciated by their contemperaries in large part is due to thier outstanding talent and their transcendental intelligence, which surpass the common cognition of general public and their peers. For supporting example, one need look no further into history of superconductivity. The potential applications of superconductors, materials that lose electric resistance on cooling below a transition temperature, were apparent to scientists almost immediately in 1913, just two years after the discovery of superconductivity. In fact, applications had to wait 50 more years after the discovery of superconductivity, partly because the physics of superconductivity in magnetic field were misunderstood. This needs not have been so, because Shubnikov made important breakthroughs in understanding the magnetic properties of superconductors in 1930s and publish several important papers upon them. However, no one can understand his paper during his time. Thus it is not until 1961 that Kunzler experimental show that the theoretical predication was correct, and that scientists and common people appreciates the Shubnikov's great contribution.

History is also filled with the examples that one’s theory was widely recognized during his own time but then aborted or disproved. Stephen Hawking, an English theoretical physicist whose theory of exploding black hole drew upon both relativity theory and quantum mechanics, was a best-selling author and household name during his lifetime. His theory earn him many exceptional honors: he was appointed to Cambridge’s Lucasian professorship of mathematics, a post once held by Isaac Newton. However, recently, he refuted his own theory. There is a heat debate among scientists and no conclusion has been come. It is possible that only time could tell us the validity of his theory.

It is also possible that the greatness could be appreciated by contemporaries. There are several possible reasons. First, the discovery is so important that even common people without expertise in this field could imagine the potential contribution to mankind. One example in science also involve in superconductivity. When Muller and Bendnorz discover high temperature superconductivity in 1986, all people exclaim that an era of superconductivity would soon come. And next year, Muller and Bendnorz acquired Noble Prize. Secondly, a strong background of individuals may accentuate this recognization process. A person with a humble background would be unengaging. Thus few people would know about his work.

In conclusion, the speaker unfairly generalizes. Overlooking the complicity of this problem and just come a simply conclusion, the speaker fails to recognize that the cognition is a gradual process. If the theory or discovery is within the knowledge of people, the significance of the contribution would immediately be recognized, then latter confirmed.

If the theory or discovery is within the knowledge of people可以改一下,换成人们可以理解这些理论的发现的相关知识,这么表述还是有点chenglish, the significance of the contribution would immediately be recognized, then latter confirmed.
