Argument38 小弟第二篇,希望大家多拍

38The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.

"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism."

In order to prevent colds and lower absenteesim in West Meris shcools and workplaces, the argurer recommends the daily use of Ichthaid. To support this recommendation, the argurer discribes the situation in nearby East Meria and concludes that easting a great amout of fish can prevent colds. In my opinion, the argurer's opinion is not well supported by these evidences.

There is no evidence that shows a causal relation between the less or no colds and eating a substantial amout of fish. In this memo, the argurer only indicates that in East Meria, the fish consumption is very high and people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for colds. But he doesn't give us any evidence to show the relation between these two facts. Maybe the cosumpiton of another food in East Meria is great and it is because of this food that people in East Meria have less colds; and, moreover, it is more possible that people in East Meria don't tend to treat their colds in hospital, so they seldom go to hospital for their treatment of colds.

Even though there does exist a causal relation between consumption of fish and few colds in West Meria, we cannot say that the situation will be the same in West Meria. West Meria and East Meria are different cities, so there willl definitely quite a few differences between them. It is more likely that in East Meria the prices of fish are much cheaper than that in West Meria, which encourages the consumption , and the weather in West Meria is warmer which of course does good to reduce frequency of colds, in West Meria people have already got few colds so there is no need for them to pay a lot of money to buy fishes as the people in East Meria do.

If we admit that eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent people in West Meria from catching cold, we still doubt the recommendation of the daily use of Ichthaid. As it shows in the memo, Ichthaid is a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil which means it is not fish at all. Has Ichthaid the same function as fishes? It is great problem, because fish oil is not fish after all. It stands a good chance that Ichthaid has little sustances which derived from fish and the substances it contains has no effect on preventing colds, so taking Ichthaid is quite unlike eating fishes and then it cannot help people in West Meria prevent colds and lower absentation.

In a word, the information in this argument cannot buttress the arguer's conclusion. To strenthen it,the aruger must provide us clear evidence about the relation between fish consumption and lower colds, the details of West Meria city and the Ichthaid.
