Scores from the internet-based test-ing format (TOEFL iBT), which includes a speaking section, are preferred. If TOEFL iBT is not available in your area, you must take the current TOEFL and the Test of Spoken English (TSE). If we already have TOEFL scores for you or you have taken the TOEFL in the past two years, you must supplement your scores with the TSE.
The TOEFL is given as either a paper-based or computer-based test. Applicants are expected to achieve a minimum total score of 577 (paper-based) or 233 (computer-based) on the TOEFL and a minimum of 57 (paper-based) or 23 (computer-based) on each of the three sections. A score of 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based) is preferred. Admission Requirements
Individuals are admitted to the Graduate School of Design as students in a particular degree program or occasionally as special students who pursue independent study rather than an academic degree. Specific requirements for admission to the degree programs offered by the GSD are outlined in the respective sections on those programs in this Catalog. The GSD does not accept transfer credits toward a degree program for work completed at other institutions.
Requests for Application Materials
The application will be available online beginning September 1, 2007, at www.gsd.harvard.edu/admissions. You may also request a Catalog online or contact: Harvard University Graduate School of Design Admissions Office 48 Quincy Street Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138, U.S.A. Visiting the GSD. Applicants are encouraged to visit the GSD during scheduled open houses. Applicants may also schedule appointments with an admission officer through the Office of Student Services. Interviews are not required, however, and do not affect admission decisions.
Early Admission for Students at Harvard College. Qualified undergraduates at Harvard are eligible for early admission into the Master in Architecture and Master in Landscape Architecture professional degree programs and may take all or a portion of the first year of graduate study during their senior year. Such students must apply during their junior year and follow the regular admis-sion procedure.
Application Deadlines
All components of the application must be submitted online, with the exception of the portfolio (if required), which must be sent by regular mail. The online application includes all instructions, policies, and forms, and will be available at www.gsd.harvard.edu/admissions by September 1, 2007.
Please note that the deadlines below are not postmark deadlines. It is the applicant’s responsibility to see that all materials, including test scores, are received by the Office of Admission by the appropriate deadline. We cannot guarantee that materials received after the deadline will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee.
Architecture. December 14, 2007: Deadline for online submission of appli-cation and fee, transcripts, letters of recommendation, resume, essay, GRE scores, and TOEFL scores (if applica-ble). January 2, 2008: Deadline for Architecture portfolios to be received in the Office of Admission.
Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Design, Master in Design Studies, Doctor of Design. January 18, 2008. Please note that there is only one deadline for these programs. By this date, online submission of the application, fee, tran-scripts, letters of recommendation, resume, essay, GRE scores, and TOEFL scores (if applicable) must be made, and the portfolio, if required, must be received in the Office of Admission.
Accuracy of Application
It is important that applications be accu-rate and complete. Occasionally, candi-dates for admission or financial aid have made inaccurate statements or submit-ted false materials. In most cases, these misrepresentations are discovered during the admission process; the applicant is then rejected, and notification is made to such other universities or testing serv-ices as may be appropriate. If a misrep-resentation is discovered after a candidate is admitted or a degree has been awarded, dismissal or revocation of the degree will ordinarily result. Application materials become the prop-erty of the GSD and cannot be returned (with the exception of the portfolio) or forwarded to any other party. Although every effort will be made to return portfolios if appropriate arrangements are made, the GSD will not be responsible for lost or damaged portfolios.
Contents of the Application
All applications for degree programs must include the following materials:
Application form.
Supplemental forms (if applicable).
Resume.
Official transcript(s). An official transcript is required from each college and university from which the applicant has received credit, including summer schools, junior colleges, and schools from which the applicant has transferred credit. A foreign student whose university or college does not issue transcripts must obtain a certified letter from the institution that lists, where applicable, courses and examinations taken and grades and degrees received. If the transcript or letter is not in English, a certi-fied translation must also be included.
Letters of recommendation. Applicants are required to obtain three letters of recommendation, at least two of them from college instructors and, if appropriate, one from an employer. Applicants who have been out of school for several years may request letters from employers or other persons in a position to evaluate their professional abilities and academic potential, although letters from college instructors are preferred.
Essay.
MArch, MLA, MAUD, MLAUD and MUP applicants: Please write an essay that addresses your background as it relates to your academic and professional interests, and why you wish to pursue the specific GSD degree program to which you are applying. Limit responses to approximately 1,000 words.
MDesS applicants: Write a statement that addresses the selection of your area of study in relation to your academic and/or career objectives and how the MDesS program would fit the objectives. Reference should be made to past academic or professional experience in your area of interest. Your statement should not exceed 1,000 words.
DDes applicants: Submit a proposal describing the research that you plan to engage in during your studies. The proposal will be evaluated based on (1) its promise for original contribution to the design professions, (2) its feasibility to be completed within the time constraints of the program, and (3) its congruence with the research interests of at least two GSD faculty members who may eventually serve on the thesis committee. The research proposal should not exceed 1,500 words. DDes applicants may also be contacted for an interview.

Application fee. A nonrefundable application fee of $75 U.S. is required for each application to a degree program as well as for an application submitted for special student status. The application fee must be received for any application to be considered complete.
Portfolio. Applicants to degree programs other than the Master in Urban Planning program must submit a portfolio that includes their most important and representative design and research work. Master in Urban Planning applicants do not need to submit a portfolio. The portfolio for Master in Design Studies and Doctor of Design applicants should consist of scholarly, academic and/or professional work and may or may not include visual material, at the discretion of the applicant and as related to the proposed research area. Special students may also be required to submit portfolios.
Portfolio Content: Photographic or photostatic reproductions must show work in the visual arts or design that has been executed by the applicant. Slides, videotapes, and computer disks are not acceptable. The work should include examples of freehand drawings executed by the applicant. Those applying for advanced placement in professional degree programs or for postprofessional degree programs are expected to submit examples of work demonstrating their ability to pursue study at an advanced level. All work must be securely bound, the preferred dimensions of which are 8.5" x 11", but should not exceed 13" or 16” x 2".
Identification: The front of the binder must have the applicant’s name, the college or university from which he or she received the bachelor’s degree, the major, and the degree program to which he or she is applying. In addition, the applicant’s name, the date of the project, and a statement of whether the project was academic, office-related, or personal should be included on each page. In the case of collaborative work, the contribution by the applicant must be described precisely.
Return: If you would like your portfolio returned, you must submit a return envelope and a check or money order (made payable to Harvard University) to cover the cost of return postage. The GSD will not be responsible for lost or damaged portfolios and will not retain portfolios for which the cost of return postage was not provided. Applicants who wish to retrieve portfolios in person after April 1, 2008, must so specify in their application, and must do so by May 15, 2008, or the portfolio will be discarded. If arrangements for return of a portfolio are not made by May 15, 2008, the portfolio will be discarded.
Notice of Admission
Applicants are notified about admission by regular mail by the first week of April. If applicants have not received notification by April 15, 2008, they should contact the Admissions Office at 617-495-5453. Information about admission status is not given by telephone. There is no mid-year admission.
Deposit
Each student admitted to the GSD will be required to pay, upon acceptance of admission, a nonrefundable deposit of $750 U.S., which will be credited toward the tuition fee for the first year of residence. The letter of admission will specify the date on which both the acceptance and the deposit become due. If an applicant does not register for the term for which he or she was admitted, the deposit will be forfeited.
Financial Certification for International Students
The U.S. Immigration Service requires that international students certify that they have the necessary funds available to cover tuition and living expenses while studying in the United States. For the academic year 2007-2008, international students who attend the GSD must certify that a minimum of $52,194 is available for use during the academic year (9 months), plus an additional $5,000 for one dependent (child or spouse), and $3,000 for each additional dependent.
Forms for making this certification will be furnished to all entering students from other countries, and the funds must be certified in U.S. dollars. A completed certification form must be submitted before a Certificate of Eligibility (for Non-immigrant F-1 Student Status) Form I-20 will be issued. After a student enrolls, he or she must recertify funds if there is a change in visa status or if an I-20 must be extended. The new amount will be based on rate of tuition and living expenses applicable to the year of study. Information on deadlines for submission of these forms will be included with the offer of admission.
Harvard International Office
Upon acceptance by the school, international students will receive information from the Harvard International Office, 864 Holyoke Center, 1350 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138, U.S.A., regarding government regulations, visas, and employment.
All incoming international students registering at the GSD must report to the Harvard International Office at the beginning of the academic year. Failure to do so will result in the withholding of a student’s Harvard ID card, and students will not be enrolled in any courses. International students must present evidence of immigration status, such as passports and entry permits. This requirement applies to all students who hold an F-1 Student Visa or a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa letter. See hio.harvard.edu.
Admission Procedures for Special Students
The GSD occasionally admits special students who generally meet the qualifications for admission to the school but do not intend to be degree candidates. The special student program is normally for those who have sufficient professional experience such that following a regular degree program would not be to their best advantage. Special students must follow the regular admission procedures. Their applications must include a proposed program of study. They must pay full tuition for a one-year residency and are ineligible for financial aid. Special students may enroll in or audit courses, but need not pursue a full academic program. They normally do not participate in design studios. Special students generally will not be considered for admission to degree programs at a later date.
Reapplication for Admission:
Reapplication within Two Years. This procedure is applicable to a former applicant or a former student wishing to reapply for admission to the GSD within two years of the original application. The applicant must submit the following:
New application form
New application fee at current rate
New portfolio (if applicable)
Transcript(s) of any additional academic preparation since the last application was filed. Transcripts sent to the GSD with the original application do not have to be resubmitted.
One new letter of recommendation pertaining to the work or study done since the last application was filed.
Any other supporting documentation as required for the applicable academic year and degree program as described in the current Catalog and shown on the current application form.
Reapplication after Two Years. If an applicant wishes to reapply for admission after two years, it is necessary that he or she resubmit all forms and documentation as specified for an initial application.
Reapplication for Financial Aid. A new application for financial aid is required for each academic year. See the section on Financial Aid that follows.
Three-Application Maximum. An applicant may apply a maximum of three times to the same GSD degree program. Once the applicant has been denied admis-sion for the third time, further applica-tions to the same program will not be given consideration.
Tuition and Expenses
Tuition
The tuition for academic year 2007– 2008 is U.S. $33,438 ($16,719 per term).
Health Service Fee and Insurance Premium
The required Health Service Fee for a single student for academic year 2007-2008 is $1,426 U.S., and the required Blue Cross/Blue Shield insurance premium for a single student is $1,362. This premium in addition to the Health Service Fee must be paid by each student unless he or she files a waiver form with the Insurance Office demonstrating other coverage. To fill out a Blue Cross/Blue Shield Insurance Waiver Form online, go to www.uhs.harvard.edu. The firm deadline for filing waivers is September 30 for the fall term, and February 28 for the spring term. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure the waiver has been received and recorded by the deadline. Foreign students are not eligible to waive the Blue Cross/Blue Shield coverage, unless they have comparable U.S.-based coverage. Please note that students who want family coverage must sign special applications in the Insurance Office, University Health Services (UHS), 75 Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138, U.S.A. Same sex domestic part-ners may be covered by the student insurance plan. Proper certification, such as a letter certified by the City of Cambridge, and a domestic partner form, are required by UHS Member Services. For questions, call 617-495-2008.

Expenses
Because personal needs and tastes vary, only very general estimates of living costs (all in U.S. dollars) can be given. The following expenses—term bill charges and estimated living expenses—are offered by the GSD for planning purposes. The term bill charges are fixed for an academic year, and the estimated living expenses are considered as an average minimum cost for a single student; adjustments should be made for families and other special require-ments. The student activity fee supports GSD Student Forum and student organi-zation activities.
Costs are computed for the academic year only—approximately 36 weeks, including interim vacation periods. No allowance is included for long-distance travel to or from the student’s home or for any summer and vacation expenses.

Billing and Payment
Payment of charges for any given term must be made before students are permitted to register for that term. Term bills for the fall will be sent to students electronically in late July. Payments will be due by August 3 for the fall term and by January 4 for the spring term.
Students must pay full tuition for at least the minimum number of terms of residency required by the degree program. Restrictions are placed on the awarding of degrees and diplomas, participation in commencement, and on the release of transcripts until all indebtedness to the university is satisfied. See the GSD Student Handbook.
Upon request, the university will permit students to pay their bills for the academic year in eight monthly installments. There is a service charge of $35 per term for this payment option. Students using the monthly payment option must pay any back balance plus one-quarter of their charges for a given term before they will be permitted to register for that term. GSD students who are negligent in making their monthly payments during one semester will not be permitted to use the option in subse-quent semesters.
Tuition for Less than Full-Time Enrollment
Students who have received written authorization from the program director and the Office of Student Services to enroll on a part-time basis will pay tuition according to the following schedule.

Graduation and Commencement Participation
The Office of Student Services maintains the following policy in regard to participation in commencement ceremonies. Students who have not fulfilled their degree requirements, or have an outstanding financial obligation to the university, will not be allowed to walk in commencement exercises.
For students who have fulfilled their degree requirements but have outstanding obligations to the university, the following policies apply:
Students whose outstanding term bills are less than $500, or who have outstanding library books or fines, telephone bills will have their diplomas withheld by the GSD. Their names will be listed in the Harvard commencement program, and they will be eligible to participate in commencement cere-monies, but they will receive an empty envelope. The GSD will release diplomas to these students upon notification from the Student Billing Office that their term bills are cleared or upon notifica-tion from other offices. NOTE: Students with outstanding term bills greater than $500 will have their degrees withheld by the university, and they will not eligible to participate in commencement ceremonies.
Financial Assistance
The deadline for applying for financial assistance is February 10, 2008. Please review the GSD Financial Aid web page for specific instructions.
Sources of financial assistance at the Graduate School of Design can vary according to each student’s situation. Listed below are the three categories of types of aid for which students may be eligible.

Application Instructions
All aid applicants who are US citizens or permanent residents must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before February 10, 2008. Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, using our federal school code (E00212).
For Restricted Scholarships, there is an additional application which can be downloaded from our webpage.
Students seeking outside awards should review the Outside Awards section on the GSD Financial Aid website.
Eligibility for All Awards
Students must be registered at least half-time in a degree program. To be eligible for federal aid and GSD grant, students must follow the requirements for satisfactory academic progress listed in the Policies and Procedures section of the Catalog. In addition to those policies, students must adhere to the policies listed in the GSD Financial Aid Handbook. The Financial Aid Handbook is distributed to aid recipients with each year’s award letter. Students must apply each year for financial aid; continuing student applications and instructions are distributed during the spring semester.

非常感谢melty的提醒与帮助。我会把它们整理一下。对于网上的申请信息，正在美国读书的朋友你们肯定比我更清楚。而且即使在我申请的那一年，所有学校的奖学金情况都看了，唯独没有看GSD的。结果发现有两个清华的MDES and MUP拿到了好像是$15，000或$20,000 的东亚奖学金。实际上以我的当时的背景，很有可能拿到的。所以希望大家都能得到准确的信息。
我只是对于工作，H1B，及转学换专业比你们经验多一些。下面我会写出来，发些材料给你们参考一下。同时我会把我被解雇的经验告诉大家一下。希望对美国的朋友们有用。
