TOPIC: ISSUE190 - "As long as peoplein a society are hungry or out of work or lack the basic skills needed tosurvive, the use of public resources to support the arts is inappropriate-and,perhaps, even cruel when one considers all the potential uses of suchmoney."
According to the human being's history, itis not hard to discover that, in truth, the conflict between the material lifeand spiritual life has existed long. Material life, which is dealing with theproblem of staying warm, eating enough, job security and the basic skillsneeded to survive, is always regarded as the most fundamental conditions for aman's life. However, the spiritual life, represented by paintings, music, literature, films and some other art styles, indeed also play a great rolewhich can never be left out easily on human being's progress. Vincent van Gogh,Rembrandt, Mozart, who are all greatly gifted artists, are also the tragicfigures struggling to live on the lowest material life's level. From these realexamples above, I think, despite speaker's everything is material-centered andmaterial life first, the best way for our human beings to live a happy life isto strike a balance between the material life and spiritual life.(开头总体不错,但有点长,最好短点)
To begin with, I must admit that speaker'sperspective is partially reasonable. Since we all know that, in view of theMaslow's hierarchy of needs, staying warm and eating enough both belong to thephysiological needs, the lowest hierarchy of needs. And the problem related toout of work and lack the basic survival skills belongs to the safety needs, which is only a little higher than the physiological needs. And these twohierarchies of needs are defined as deficiency needs in Maslow's theory. Ifthese needs are not met, any man's goals or desires will lose their meaning, which means, in Maslow's own words, that "it is quite true that man livesby bread alone -- when there is no bread." Therefore, only having regardof Maslow's theory, and for an individual itself, when he is dying of dehydrateand must make a decision between an invaluable masterpiece by Van Gogh and acup of water. It is no doubt that the cup of water will be his or her answerand only possible answer.(借助Maslow理论分析不错)
However, even though in some particularsituation that material life is indeed priority to the art, speaker's statementhere still obviously undervalues the important status that art is playing onthe human being's history of civilization.(怎么见过play和status搭配) Theart, in essence, is one of the human beings' creative spiritual contributions, which records the history of human's civilization, which reflects the realscene of the society in different times, which is all along to seek the undyingpart in human's spiritual civilization. That is to say,it is because of the art that mankind's civilization is yet kept completelytoday, distinguishes the humans from other animals and builds a bridge betweenthe past and now,(这句话有点问题,distinguish的主语好像没有) bythe way of artists' works which express an unique feeling, a eternal one, canbe understood only by men and women, children and the old, and the one nevergrow old in human's long history. That is why, today when we watch Van Gogh,Monet's paintings, listen to Beethoven'smoonlight sonata, we will still be touched and cannothelp ourselves by an strong power. A power comes from arts, a power will neverdie in human's history and our spirit. From this view, art is also a need assame as food, water, jobs and basic survive skills. The art enriches our dailylife, helps us to relocate our situation in nature's history, and makes ourlife colorful.(前面讲的都是art的重要性,而Paul-Gauguin这个例子更侧重于在art和rich life中的选择问题,感觉逻辑有点不严谨) Paul Gauguin, a Frenchleading post-impressionist painter in 19 century, had ever been a stockbrokerand lived a rich life with his wife and five children. However, driven by astrong power from his passion of art, he made an unbelievable decision between materiallife and art. He gave up his wealth and even left his family. In order toexperience a simple life and create his own art, he sailed to the tropicislands and lived with the original native. He spent his last thirteen years inthese islands and only returned to France once. In spite of the hard life inthese islands, Gauguin's most famous and great masterpieces, represented by"Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?", were allfinished in this period. Gauguin's life vividly interprets a real mankind whenhe or she faces the choices between material life and art will also make anabsolutely reverse decision which is against with people's common sense. Itmeans, the notion that human always puts material life before everything else isnot exact. In this society, there always exist some persons, who care abouttheir spirit and regard art more than their lives. And this is the meaning ofart.(总体不错,例子说明artmay possess more priority than rich life, 但跟文章的主要问题不该用money支持art, 而是解决温饱之类的问题,貌似没起到有效的支持,毕竟rich life和温饱区别很大)
Besides, we must realize that the problemsof starvation, unemployment and lack of the basic skills to survive cannot be solved in one day.(这点不错) In fact, these problems with greatlikely can be never eliminated. Looking at the world's history, no matter howflourishing and developed a society had ever been. Starvation and unemploymenthave never disappeared. In my opinion, even though a better or perfect society, such as community society, can never help all their citizens to live withinenough food and adequate jobs. Because the reasons leading to this situationare not only related to the construction of this society but also andpotentially more important are involved in those sufferers themselves. A lazyman without any goals is more dangerous than starvation itself. How do I dealwith such a person even when we have sufficient food? If we feed him, it maylead more lazy persons to imitate and as a result more and more persons donothing but still request for free food. In view of the huge obstacle before usto eliminate starvation and unemployment, to delay the art until we solve allthe material problems is to delay the art forever. Furthermore, Can the use ofpublic resources to support the arts always be the conflict with solving thematerial problems? In fact, to build a museum or a art college can not onlyoffers positions for people without jobs but also develops teenagers who areinterested in art with skills to survive. At least, this measure will help toraise some artists' life, who often play tragic roles in this society.
In sum, considering of the huge value theart contributes to the human's civilization and their important role in themodern society, the concept that thinking about material problems beforeeverything and even to give up any measures to support the art only for thesmall persons, who have not reached the lowest material level, has beeninappropriate. So to seek a balance between the material life and the art isthe best way to ensure that most persons in this society can satisfy their bothneeds on material and spiritual life.
