Issue 15

Education is vital for students' career. Thus when it comes to the issue that whether educational institutions should actively encourage their students to choose fields of study which will prepare them for lucrative careers, people's opinion differs from person to person. As far as I'm concerned, this argument have different meanings in different conditions.
As for students who has wealthy families, it's better to leave the option of what fields to study for themselves. After all, they don't have problems with food or clothes. In consequence, the most important reason for study is not to get rid of poverty. They can choose what they really like such as history, music, language etc. If educational institutions work hard to persuade them to prepare for lucrative careers, the result won't outweigh the cost. Even worse, maybe we will lose a great musician just because of the interference of the institutions.
On the contrary, for the students who live in penury, educational institutions should give them some advice of study. Because the most significant reason for them to study is to get some useful skills so that they can earn more money and support their families. However, they might be confused about what sort of skills are most useful. They usually have no idea of the economics or policies enacted by government as well. So without the suggestions of educational institutions, they will be struggled to find the shortcut to get ready for future, which oftentimes lead to deeper social problems. While with the aid of some organizations to clear out the mist, they can go to work quicker.
Someone would say that it's not fair for this poor students for they have no discretion to study in fields which they like. But just because they get help from others doesn't mean that they have to do abandon their favorite disciplines forever. In my opinion, after they get jobs, it's good for them to dive in what they like cause they will have less pressure then.
So I reinforced my position that whether the institutions should encourage students to choose fields of study for lucrative careers should base on the family condition of students.

Argument 85/87

The fact that Waymarsh citizens checked out more mystery novels is not in accordance with the former study which shows that citizens prefer literary classics as reading material. Thus the author came to a conclude that the respondents in the first study had misrepresented their reading preferences. To assess this argument, we need to examine critically a number of assumptions which it based on.
To begin with, the author thinks that the people who took part in the first study are the same as the people who borrowed books from public libraries. However, there might be another case that those the first study just select people from one district of the whole city, while the record of the second study is conducted in every public library all around the large city. Thus if these are two groups of people, the conclusion would be irrational.
Even though the two study were both carried out in the whole city which means that the people who participated in these studies are mostly same, there's still some other questions. One of the other assumptions is that the people's preference of reading material can be drawn from the record of public libraries.  But what actually might happen is that those who like reading literary classics prefer to buy these books rather than borrow them from libraries. So the phenomenon that people always checked out mystery books doesn’t reflect the truth of the majority’s predilection. As a result, there would be no relation between the two study and the conclusion is inconvincible as well.
What’s more, this conclusion is also based on an assumption that the public libraries have every type of books or the number of every type of books are equal. More probable, there’s more mystery novels in libraries than literary classics. In consequence, even though every book of literary classics was checked out, the total number compared to mystery novels is still small. Consider this case is the reality and the author’s is not the fact, then the second study would be meaningless due to the unfair from the very beginning.
In summary, this conclusion is not unexceptionable and would be totally overthrown when these explicit or implicit assumptions are unwarranted.

Technology, while apparently aimed to simplify our lives, only makes our lives more complicated.

As technology progress faster and faster nowadays, someone may assert that though technology aimed to simplify our lives, turned out only makes our lives more complicated. I hold reservations on this argument. Though in some ways technology turned out harmful, what technology always do is making our lives easier.
It's true that technology do have some bad influence on our society. For example, with more precise instruments, culprit may commit crimes in more surreptitous ways thus makes it harder for police to find any clues. However, on one hand the the technology helps the culprit, on the other hand it does favor to policeman as well. With more eletronic monitors all over the city, actually no one can escape doing something bad.
What's more, technology bring us more convinience. With Internet, one can do almost everything. If you want to buy something at home, you can go to Ebay or other websites which sell food and clothes. You can also meet your friends online using some instant message applications such as Wechat or Message. NO matter how far the distance between you and your friends, just several clicks and then you can even talk face to face. What an amazement? In addition, one can always get knowledge from Internet. Wikipedia and MOOC are always easy to reach.
Besides Internet, technology also have great influence on our daily lives. One can hardly imagine that we can go to the opposite of the Earth in one day even decades ago. However, by plane of which the speed can reach more than 700 kilometers per hour, we can go to every corner on the Earth. There's many other transportations as well. For example, with subways our time spent on commute have been shortened a lot.
To conclude, I reinforce my position that technology has brought us more benefits rather than make our lives more complicated.

SuperCorp recently moved its headquarters to Corporateville. The recent surge in the number of homeowners in Corporateville proves that Corporateville is a superior place to live than Middlesburg, the home of SuperCorp's current headquarters. Moreover, Middleburg is a predominately urban area and according to an employee survey, SuperCorp has determined that its workers prefer to live in an area that is not urban. Finally, Corporateville has lower taxes than Middlesburg, making it not only a safer place to work but also a cheaper one. Therefore, Supercorp clearly made the best decision.

In this argument, the author asserts that Corporateville is a better place to live than Middlebrug for workers from SuperCorp, so the dicision that moved SuperCorp's headquarters to Corporative is the best. However, these argument based on some assumptions that may be unwarranted.
First of all, the author maintains that the recent surge in the number of homeowners in Corporateville proves it's a superior place to live than Middleburg. However, the increas of homeowners in Corporateville doesn't necessary indicates that it's better than Middleburg. There may be other reasons. For example, the government of Corporativille may just carried out a lot of policies to simulate this city's economy, thus more people believed that the price of the land in this city may increase later. So they just bought these house for investment rather than to live. If so, there's no evidence that Corporateville is a better palce to live.
What' more, the author also drew the conclusion from a survey that SuperCorp's workers prefer to live in an area that is not urban while Middleburg is a predominately urban area. When it comes to the issue that whether the result of a certain survey is convincing or not, there's always lots of quetions. To illustrate, does the survey conducted among all the workers or just a few? If only fifty percents or less workers responded the question, the result would be meaningless at all. In addition, even if the survey was conducted among all the workers, there's always some gaps between what people say and what people actually do. These workers have been stay in urban area for years, which might make them feel a bit bored. So they want to live in a different way.
Finally, the lower taxes in Corporateville is not equal to safety as well. The lower taxes may mean that there is less money for government to build public facilities or transportations. The number of policeman may also less than higher taxes areas such as Middlesburg. So it's inconsequential to say that Corporaville is a safer place to live.
For the above mentioned cases which make the assumptions adopted by the author unwarranted, it's too careless to say that the decision to move headquarters to Corporaville is the best decision.
