我也不知道为什么要占楼

立个flag 考试前我会把八月写过提纲的文章修改提纲并写全文九月的题目也会全跟进考试完也不会放弃练习作文为了以后paper和presentation不求人

Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position

TS: There is a saying that educational institutions should persuade students from fields they are unlikely to succeed. I cannot agree with such claim for students’ latent capacity are hard to predict and it may not been shown during school days. On the other hand, schools and college , educational institutions have no right to deprive one’s chance to get education they can only advise them. For opponents, I assume they support to dissuade those students for fields they are not good at for the sake of good jobs which I think should not be an issue in this situation.

Pt1: The possibility for a student to success in his field is hard to predict.
-The famous physicist Plank used to be persuade by his professor for changing his field.
-In a class, the students who achieve the most success in the future is hardly the top student.

First of all, the possibility for a student to success in his field is hard to predict. It is unwise to prevent students from fields they want. Some genus mature slowly in their professional life. In some cases, they even perform the worst in school but turn out to be successful later. So persuading one from his loved field only because he does not show capacity in school might be bias. Take Plank’s experience for example, when plank was in university, his professor suggest him abandon physics for it is quite complete at the time, seems nothing else to discover. But Plank didn’t quite that easily, he keep dig in physics and decades later, he created Plank constant and helped establish quantum physics theory. If Plank listened to his teacher, quantum physic might introduced t us centuries later or did not exist at all. Also in our life, when we attend to classmate reunion years later from graduation, we find out with surprise that some slow mind students turns out to be successful. Thus, schools should not interfere fields student are in even though they seem unfit.

Pt2: As a educational institution, schools have only rights to advice students to make better choice but not dissuade.
-college offer freshmen a chance to change major
-College students are allowed to choose a second major to study.

In addition, as an educational institution, schools have only rights to advice students to make better choice but not dissuade. The main duty for schools and academy is providing education that students want and make sure they get well educated. One’s major seems to be personal decision. Persuading students from a certain field and judging his school performance is violating one’s tight. And the institution can offer help to them to change their mind. Such as in many universities, after the first semester, they offer freshmen a chance to reschedule their major and adjust professional study plans. At time, student who finds out he is not good at his major could seize the chance to turn around. But this is all depends on their own willingness. Moreover, in some academies, they encourage senior students to choose a second major, in case it is too late for those students to change major. Students are never been pushed to do these things. Because no matter what their grades are, they should be advised but not deprived from study what they want.

Pt3: For getting employment, some people support such opinion that educational institutions should talk students out of the fields they are less qualified for. Actually jobs should not be a consideration in this issue. And their assumption is subjectively from themselves. Employers are cline to have potential employees. And students who showed less talent in his field usually showed a great ability to manage this business
- Google hire people with great ideas, grades become secondary.
- Students who preform less capable in curriculums always tend to establish their own business in their field and be the manager who hire qualified people work for them.

However, for the sake of employment, some people support such opinion that educational institutions should talk students out of the fields they are less qualified for. Actually jobs should not be a consideration in this issue. And their assumption is subjectively from themselves. They hold the impression that companies prefer students who did well in their study. The higher rank they are the easier to get a job. But some employers are cline to have potential employees. Such as google they sometimes hire people with great idea but may not studies well in school. Also, a contract is not necessary to be the only choice for work. Some students who showed less talent in his field usually showed a great ability to manage his field. They tend to start their own company and hire qualified people to work for them. So educational institution should not dissuade students from their field only because of bad grades.

To sum up, educational students should just focus on providing education but never prevent students from chasing their dreams in some fields, even though it seems unsuitable for them .

The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Balmer Island Gazette.

The population on Balmer Island increases to 100,000 during the summer months. To reduce the number of accidents involving mopeds and pedestrians, the town council of Balmer Island plans to limit the number of mopeds rented by each of the island's six moped rental companies from 50 per day to 30 per day during the summer season. Last year, the neighboring island of Torseau enforced similar limits on moped rentals and saw a 50 percent reduction in moped accidents. We predict that putting these limits into effect on Balmer Island will result in the same reduction in moped accidents.

Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the prediction and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the prediction.

According to the letter the author predict that Balmer Island’s moped and pedestrians’ accidents will reduce after putting limits on moped rentals. Citing the fact that Torseau Island enact the same limits and got a significant reduction in moped accidents. In order to fully evaluate this prediction, a question about the cause of accidents happened on Balmer Island need to be answered. And we also need answers about Torseau Island’s population density and the exact time when they enforced such limitation, so that we can access whether Torseau Island’s experiences can be used as reference.

To begin with, we need to know who cause those accidents. Since Balmer Island want to reduce the number of accidents involving mopeds and pedestrians, the cause of those accidents would be either mopeds or pedestrians. Trying to control moped numbers could be ineffective if those accidents are cause by pedestrians. Only when we get the answer about who take the main responsibility of those accidents, can we access the validity of this prediction. Assuming mopeds take most responsibility, there is still a possibility that rental mopeds are out of this. So the ratio of rental mopeds in accidents need to be noted because some of these mopeds could be owned personally. When we had a firm answer that these accidents are caused by rental mopeds, the action that putting limits on moped rental companies could be expected for some changes on this problem.

Furthermore, in the letter, the writer use Torseau Island’s successful experience as reference but information about Torseau Island is lacking. A question about Torseau Island’s population needs to be answered, or in other words, what is its population density. Since we know that Balmer Island’s population can reach one hundred thousand during the summer month, but what we don’t know is Torseau Island’s population. If Torseau Island has a larger population, naturally, there will be much more mopeds running on the roads. In that case, controlling rental mopeds number could reduce number of vehicles thus being an effective method to reduce accident and also made his prediction reasonable. Only if Torseau Island has an approximately the same population with Balmer Island’s, their experience can be regard helpful in this issue, thus makes the author’s prediction valid.

In addition, another question whether Torseau Island enforce moped limits in summer need to be answered. Balmer Island town council wants to reduce accidents in summer time, so it is better take reference happened same in summer. If what happened on Torseau Island happened in winter, the driving condition could be totally different. There could be less moped on roads. And such reduction they observed could simply because of weather not such moped limits, which make the action useless and the prediction will fail. But if we get answer to confirm Torseau Island made the same decision in summer time and it worked, this could be a valuable evidence for reference to strengthen author’s prediction.

To sum up, clearly, these questions need to be address and sufficiently answered to support author’s prediction in the letter. Otherwise all efforts like simply reduce rental mopeds number and put limits on rental companies could be wasted.

Knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

History should be men’s teacher. These words came from a great Germany philosopher Herbart. However in the present world people are no longer showing enough respect to the value of the past .Some people even despise the past for they thought it is useless for nowadays decisions. I fundamentally believe such assertion cannot hold truth in most of the situations like in scientific field and internet business, but when it comes to innovation product, stories could be different.

First of all, for scientists, learning from the past is a significant way to build new advance knowledge. Previous scientific achievements became foundation to new ones. There are theories proven to be wrong so that the following scientists won’t make the same mistakes. There are data and formulas had been created for us so we can apply numbers to it and get result directly without any experiments. It is because of Plank’s proposal to metric energy with quantum as a unit, quantum physics can be developed to string theory today. Physicists no longer troubled by micro particle phenomenon. And thanks to inspiration from Einstein, Schrondinger decided to take a second look at the wave, he found the wave dynamic influence. With those scientist’s effort, scientist today don’t have to pick up a direction to find out if it is correct, they can just use the right data , and modern science became advanced and accurate.

In addition, businessman have to study old cases and analysis past data to predict future success. When a huge firm made significant decision on investment, they have to do a lot of homework, they studied tons of old cases to construct their own business model. They have to analysis old data to value their new proposal’s feasibility. Some new firms have to take successful company’s experience as reference to themselves. The internet business tycoon Alibaba used to take EBay and amazon’s business mode to modify its own business and come up with the decision to start an online shopping website, taobao, which turns out to be a huge success.

While knowing the past doesn’t benefit people’s present decision all the time, sometimes the result could be counterproductive. With rapid change of world and all kinds of unpredictable factors, some solid data and experience became no longer useful, In that case , over believe knowing the past empower people’s judgement would finally hurt people’s decision. Take previous cellphone tycoon Nokia as an example, when Nokia at its peak, the company built a comprehensive data base which include millions of cellphone users’ information from their age to preference. Such data base is especially used for developing new product because it offers target consumers. But Nokia still got beaten by Apple , even though Steve Jobs didn’t got any information about what people want. In innovation field, a good idea wins the past.

To sum up, knowing the past do prevent us from circuitous around, it offered us solid evidence or successful experience to scientific research and business. But it is not always like that, innovation business respect golden mind more than old lessons, no matter how complete they are.

Evidence suggests that academic honor codes, which call for students to agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors and to notify a faculty member if they suspect that others have cheated, are far more successful than are other methods at deterring cheating among students at colleges and universities. Several years ago, Groveton College adopted such a code and discontinued its old-fashioned system in which teachers closely monitored students. Under the old system, teachers reported an average of thirty cases of cheating per year. In the first year the honor code was in place, students reported twenty-one cases of cheating; five years later, this figure had dropped to fourteen. Moreover, in a recent survey, a majority of Groveton students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without.

Write a response in which you discuss one or more alternative explanations that could rival the proposed explanation and explain how your explanation(s) can plausibly account for the facts presented in the argument.

In the article the author regards academic honor codes as the best solution to control students’ cheating in schools .He gave a successful example case of Groveton College, where cheating case had been significantly reduced after adopted of this code. In my opinion, it is still early to praise this academic honor codes because there are other explanations for less cheating cases. Students’ concern in reporting cheating, the increasing difficulty of digging out a cheating case and the validity of the survey are all key factors of this matter.

To begin with, less cheating cases could also mean some cases hadn’t been reported. Compare to teachers, students have all kinds of concerns of reporting their classmates’ cheating in exams. They are so bound up with each other, they went to class every day and hung out all the time. All these activities laid a foundation to their relationships which made it harder to sell each other out. So the explanation of less cheating cases could be the fact that students didn’t report the cheatings they saw. If a student saw his roommate cheating in an exam , he tend to talk to him in person , as a friend. Because nobody wants to be awkward in that way. Moreover, since time for an exam is usually limited, students prefer focusing on their own business than checking on others. There might be some cheatings that didn’t get caught at all.

In addition, the Groveton College case is five years ago , as time pass by, new techniques had been brought into cheating which made it harder to find out a cheating case. With the use of high tech, cheating gets easier and harder to be found out. The reducing on cheating cases could be the result of better hiding. There are invisible inks that can be write on any materials and disappear in seconds but only can be seen through some special glasses. And some students even plant an earphone deep in their ear so that they can receive message outside the building. All these things are so beyond other students’ supervision.

Furthermore, according to the only survey in the article , students claim that after the adoption of honor codes，they are less likely to cheat. However the fact is, no one tend to admit cheating in front of others. Why those students said so? The explanation of this might because of the students tend to protect their impression to others. No matter if he/she is a cheater, once asked about honest, one will not admit his/her cheating in public. Such disgraced thing should be kept to oneself. Thus the result of this survey is bias considering the possibility of students lying to investigators.

To sum up, with all those possibilities and explanations stated above, it is still early to draw a conclusion that academic honor codes is the best solution at deterring cheating among college students.

Ten years ago our company had two new office buildings constructed as regional headquarters for two different regions. The buildings were erected by two different construction companies Alpha and Zeta. Even though the two buildings had identical floor plans, the building constructed by Zeta cost 30 percent more to build, and its expenses for maintenance last year were twice those of the building constructed by Alpha. Furthermore, the energy consumption of the Zeta building has been higher than that of the Alpha building every year since its construction. Such data, plus the fact that Alpha has a stable workforce with little employee turnover, indicate that we should use Alpha rather than Zeta for our contemplated new building project.

Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

提纲：
Claim: Zeta charges more than the building really cost and their building is in poor quality.
Data: A comparison of construction and maintenance costs of two buildings.
Warrant: The building constructed by Zeta cost 30 percent more to build, and its expenses for maintenance last year were twice those of the building constructed by Alpha.
Assumption: The building materials prices in two regions are the same. (If Zeta spend more money on materials, the total budget is higher.)  
These two buildings suffer the same weather circumstances in two region. (If the region where Zeta built the building suffer much more rainfall a year, the maintenance should be higher because they have to repair roof more frequently)

Claim: Zeta’s building cost more energy than Alpha’s
Data: Energy consumption comparison between buildings constructed by Alpha and Zeta.
Warrant: the energy consumption of the Zeta building has been higher than that of the Alpha building every year since its construction.
Assumption: Climate in two regions are the same.

Claim: Alpha has a stable workforce
Data: Not given
Warrant: Little employee turnover in Alpha
Assumption: The employee who didn’t leave Alpha are work well and provide enough workforce.

全文：
In the memo, the writer recommend that they should hire Alpha rather than Zeta for their new building project claiming that Alpha is a better contractor for it performed better in their last cooperation. The writer suggest that Alpha provided a better quality building with less budget and its workforce is more stable. While the reasoning of this argument is unconvincing if those assumptions about building budgets, energy costs and companies’ workforce proved to be unwarranted. And the writer’s recommendation will be seriously challenged.

First of all, the author claim that Zeta charged more but provide poor quality contracture. When Alpha and Zeta are asked to build the same layout buildings in two regions, Zeta spend more and Alpha do and its maintenance fee is even higher. Such recommendation relies heavily on the assumption that the building materials prices are the same in two regions. Based on such an assumption, the author conclude Zeta is less reliable in business and shouldn’t be chosen as contractor for their new project. However, Zeta and Alpha built buildings in two regions there is a possibility that it is the prices in materials cause the budget difference. In addition. We are not informed about the weather in these places ,which apparently could be factor of prolonging construction schedule and further maintenance.  For instance if more rains happened in the place where Zeta built the building, construction process could be slowed down and they have to repair the roof more often. In that case, the author’s reasoning will be weaken.

Furthermore, by stating that the energy consumption of Zeta building is higher, the author rules out that Zeta build environment-unfriendly building and should be offer a second chance as their contractor. However, the author made an assumption that these two buildings suffer the same climate. Because if Zeta’s building is located in a cold place , people need to use heater or air conditioner to keep warm. In fact, building’s energy consuming is more based on climate and people’s need. Since the climate information is missing. We cannot attribute it to Zeta’s construction mistake. In addition, we are not informed about how many people are there in those two buildings. The comparison of energy consuming might be bias. Therefore, the authors reasoning is questionable.

Moreover, Even if the assumptions mentioned above are valid, the writer’s recommendation could be doubtful due to the assumption regarding the Alpha’s employees keeps its workforce stable. Claiming that Alpha’s workforce is more stable with the evidence that less alpha’s employee turnover, the author lead us to a conclusion that Alpha is a better option as a contractor. Workforce doesn’t depend on rate of reassignment but qualified employees. It is unreasonable to assume that the employees remain staying in Alpha are efficient and it is them keeping the workforce stable. For there is a possibility that the qualified employees left Alpha for better opportunities and the ones remains just dawdle around. Zeta, on the other hand, has a more fluctuate rate of unemployment, it is possible that they fired unqualified workers and hire good ones. If so, the author’s claim will be seriously challenged.

To summarize, whether or not we should implement the writer’s recommendation depends greatly on the validity of the assumptions in the argument. If these assumptions prove unwarranted, then the recommendation will be little more than the writer’s wishful thinking, and accordingly we need to completely consider the ways to value a qualified constructor.
