Arg 127 the Easy Read course improves productivity-o

113) The following is a recommendation from the personnel director to the president of Acme Publishing Company.

Many other companies have recently stated that having their employees take the Easy Read Speed-Reading Course has greatly improved productivity. One graduate of the course was able to read a 500-page report in only two hours; another graduate rose from an assistant manager to vice president of the company in under a year. Obviously, the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb in a single workday. Moreover, Easy Read would cost Acme only $500 per employee¡aa small price to pay when you consider the benefits. Included in this fee is a three-week seminar in Spruce City and a lifelong subscription to the Easy Read newsletter. Clearly, to improve productivity, Acme should require all of our employees to take the Easy Read course.

Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the advice and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the advice.

A3 (C2, C4): The productivity of the company can be improved if the employees could read faster.

A4 (C3, G4, C4): The costs of requiring all employees to take the course can be justified.

question 1: to what extent Acme is similar to the other companies in terms of job nature of the employees and whether speed reading is important for Acme productivity
- maybe the other companies are in other industries where speed reading is more useful such as auditing firms
- whether speed reading is important for Acme employees

question 2: Can this course really increase the speed of absorbing information
- the graduate who can read 500 pages in 2 hours (hoe much information does s/he absorb or understand)
- what kinds of materials (similar to those usually read by the staff in a publishing company)

question 3: is the reading speed really crucial for being promoted and improving productivity for all job positions
- other factors may be more important for someone to get promoted
- other factors may be more important for improving productivity for certain job positions
- money should be spent on these factors

question 4: will the seminar and newsletter help the employees to improve productivity
- will the employees have the time to attend the seminar
- how useful are the seminar
- how useful are the newsletter
- how long will the newsletter last
