1.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
At universities and colleges, sports and social activities are just as important as classes and libraries and should receive equal financial support.
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Nowadays, development in an all-round way has become the tendency of education in universities and colleges. Since social skills are considered to be a more and more important quality to a person, and keeping healthy is a prerequisite to gain personal achievements, they should be paid more attention and receive the same financial support as classes and libraries.
It is no doubt that students spend more time every day on studies compared to sports and social activities, but it is not directly proportional to the importance. As a bridge between middle schools and the society, universities and colleges should pay much attention to cultivation of students’ manifold abilities, such as how to lead a positive life and how to adapt to the society. Doing sports is a good lifestyle, which is benefit to both physical and mental health and keeps students in a good state for work. By participating social activities, students can learn the capability to communicate with different people, to cooperate in a team, to organize a conference, to tackle complex problems, and so forth. Good health condition and social skills are indispensable qualities to success after students step into the society, and are also prerequisites to giving full play to the academic ability. Therefore, sports and social activities are as important as classes and libraries at universities and colleges.
In addition, sports and social activities do need a lot of financial support. Generally speaking, funds for classes and libraries are mainly invested in building well-equipped faculties and updating collection of books. Both are resources that can be used for a long time. On the contrary, sports equipments cost a large amount of money at the beginning, and also need money afterwards for careful routine maintenance to make sure they are safe enough to students. Furthermore, the resources used in sports activities like sports meetings and social activities like practice in a company are usually consumable, which means schools have to pay for them every time. In fact, the total money spending on sports and social activities will end up as a considerable number. The funds for them should be equal to that for classes and libraries.
For universities and colleges, a wise way is to provide students with a well-balanced education focusing on their developments in all respects not merely the academic achievements. Given the critical function that sports and social activities perform in personal development and the great continual expenses, they should be considered as important as classes and libraries and deserve to receive financial support of the same scale.
