说实话，看着这大浪感觉那就是海啸来临的照片啊，说实话，要让我去挑战这么高的浪花，狼还没到呢，我腿就软了……

According to this video, Mexican legend Miguel del Toro once surfed a 100-foot wave “at an obscure break in Patagonia.” Too bad del Toro is a figment of the Red Bull marketing team’s imagination. The search for the 100-foot ride is on, but until someone tames it, here are the top 5 waves that have been ridden (and recorded) to date.

1. Mark Parsons, Cortes Bank

In reality, the official record for the highest wave ever surfed goes to Mike Parsons for the 70-plus-footer he surfed off California’s Cortes Bank on January 5, 2008. (Ken Bradshaw reportedly surfed an 80- to 85-foot wave off Oahu in 1998, but the photos taken from the beach were too far away to determine the exact size.) Parsons’s ride netted him a Guinness World Record, $15,000, and a Honda jet ski from the Billabong XXL Biggest Wave Award, which has been handing out prizes to surfers who have conquered the world’s largest waves since 2001.

2. Pete Cabrinha, Jaws

In second place is Pete Cabrinha, who surfed a 70-foot wave at Jaws, off Maui, on January 10, 2004:

“From the first day of tow surfing at Jaws,” says Cabrinha, “one thing became crystal clear to everyone. By towing ourselves into these waves with a jet ski, we could catch, and hopefully ride, any sized wave that the ocean would send our way.”

3. Carlos Burle, Maverick’s

His words ring true. Tied for third place are Brazilian Carlos Burle, who surfed this 68-foot wave at Maverick’s off California on November 21, 2001:

4. Dan Moore, Jaws

And Brad Gerlach, who surfed this 68-foot wave at Todos Santos, Mexico, on December 21, 2005:

These days, surfers are branching out to ride “shorter, stockier, thicker” waves and some are even reverting back to the old days, catching waves they can paddle into under their own power. Until, that is, they’re in the right place at the right time to rip off the face of that elusive 100 footer.
