Earn an M.S. in Information Science & Technology

Information technology continues to transform every aspect of our economy and society. The rapid spread of technology has generated the need for highly trained professionals to implement and maintain information systems to support business success. The AACSB Accredited M.S. in Information Science and Technology (IST) is designed to educate students in the design, development, and successful application of information systems in organizations. Detailed information can be found at http://business.mst.edu .

There are two types of Master degree programs students may follow: one with a thesis and the other without.  Either program is designed to be very flexible in order to allow students to pursue interests in many areas beyond the four required core courses. The M.S. degree can also be earned via distance education. See http://dce.mst.edu/ for more details.

Degree Requirements
The Master of Science in Information Science and Technology requires a total of 30 credit hours divided between the IST Core (12 credit hours) and IST Electives (18 credit hours) taken with appropriate restrictions. The M.S. degree with thesis requires four IST elective courses (12 credit hours) and 6 credit hours of research (IST 490) - two of the elective courses (6 credit hours) must be at the 400 level.  For the non-thesis option, six IST elective courses (18 credit hours) are required; three of the elective courses (9 credit hours) must be at the 400 level.

M.S. IST Core Courses
All M.S. candidates in IST are required to take the four core courses.  These courses are designed to ensure that all IST graduate students are exposed to Technology, Human Factors, Project Management, and Organizational Systems perspectives of information systems.

IST 436 Foundations of Internet Computing
IST 385 Human-Computer Interaction
IST 461 Information Systems Project Management
IST 351 Technical Innovation Management and Leadership

M.S. IST Elective Courses
In order to fulfill the IST electives, many students opt to complete a Graduate Certificate, which is a set of four courses selected to fit an emphasis area.  Taking these courses gives their M.S. IST a documented focus.  The Department offers Graduate Certificates in seven areas:
•        Business Intelligence
•        Enterprise Resource Planning
•        Human-Computer Interaction
•        Digital Media
•        Mobile Business and Technology
•        Project Management (Information Science Technology)
•        Psychology of Leadership

Students may also construct degrees developing a focus to suit their own needs.

Application and Admission Process
