I have been learning English since I was a primary school student. At the beginning of learning such a foreign language, I consider it a primary subject which played an essential role in my course work. And the more I learn this language, the more I am into it. It should be acknowledged that learning English in an environment where people barely speak English in their daily life is a little bit difficult. Thus in order to learn the authentic English pronunciation and accent, I watched quite a lot English teaching videos, such as Family Album USA.

After entering college, I set a goal for myself that is to further my studies in the U.S. after graduation. Thus, when I was a freshman, I spent almost every weekend taking TOEFL classes and every morning reading English articles and words. And then in my sophomore year, I started to prepare for the GRE test. Even though the large number of unknown words and complex articles made me a little frustrated, I still managed to grasp them by my day to day efforts. Even today, I am still grateful for the experience of preparing for these tests. It not only assisted me in these English tests, but also improved my English ability including writing and reading, which contributes a lot to my academic work.

As a research assistant in a research group, I need to read a great amount of English scientific publications. It is my reading ability that helps me to understand the literatures thoroughly and effectively. Besides, some of my major courses were taught in English. My good command of English on listening and speaking made it easy for me to grasp the content of the courses and discuss with the teachers smoothly.

In addition, English is also indispensable for my entertainment activities, like watching The Big Bang Theory and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Instead of reading the Chinese subtitles, which often distort the original humor inevitably due to the inaccurate translation, I could understand the connotation of humor conveyed by their conversations directly.

To sum up, considering my English proficiency on reading, writing, listening and speaking, I am confident that the language will not hinder my further studies in the environment abroad.
