Argument 14: A recent study rating 300 male and female Mentian advertising executives according to the average number of hours they sleep per night showed an association between the amount of sleep the executives need and the success of their firms. Of the advertising firms studied, those whose executives reported needing no more than 6 hours of sleep per night had higher profit margins and faster growth. These results suggest that if a business wants to prosper, it should hire only people who need less than 6 hours of sleep per night.

The speaker argue that in order to improve the business performance, it is important for those companies to hire the staff who only require a few hours – no more than 6 hours per day – to sleep. However, having had a deliberation consideration for the relationship between these two variables, I find that the argument made by the speaker is not convincing. The reasons are stated as follows.

To begin with, the speaker relied on the research conducted by an advertising company to support his or her argument. However, it seems to me that the research might not be trustable. This is because the sampling might be including human bias. Perhaps, the advertising company intentionally selected a group of executives who require a few hours to do the rest have a good performance in their career. If this is the case, the representative of the study would be limited and hence the results concluded by the studied my not be replicable by those other companies that follow the suggestion made by the research.

Even if the advertising company randomly selected the participant to approach the study, it does not mean that the author is making a sound reasoning. Perhaps, the research had studied several variables – such as the sleeping hours and the education background of the subjects – to draw the relationship between the feature of employees and the company’s performant. However, the speaker might be intentionally selecting one factor – the period required by the workers to sleep – to argue the relationship between the feature of employees and the company performant. If this is the case, it is predictable that even a company that only hired the staff who required 6 or fewer hours to sleep per night might not be able to improve its performance. If the speaker wants to persuade readers, he or she needs to provide a comprehensive research sample for us.

Thirdly, the author assumes that the quality and the performance of the executive determined the company performant. Thus, the author suggested that in order to improve the performance of the company, it is better for employers to only hire those executive that require only a few hours to do sleeping. However, the company performance is not purely determined by the executive staff. The company performance might also be affected by the landscape of the business environment and the political atmosphere. A good business environment and political situation would surely advance the company development, and vice versa. However, the author provided no solid information and evident about the political and business landscapes about the given company, it is no reasonable to believe his claim.

Even if the business and political factors could be eliminated from the evaluation, it does not mean that the feature of the executive determine the company performance. Perhaps, executive staff only follows the instruction made by the senior supervisors such as the directors and the vice presidents. Under this circumstance, the quality of the senior supervisors affects the company performance instead of the quality of the executive staff. Without ruling out the role and the rule of the executive staff in the company, it is not reasonable to state that the quality of the executive staff affect the performant of the company.  

To sum up, the author reasoning is not convincing because of its weakness of argument. The author failed to provide solid evident to support his claim that the staff and the company performance.
