Nick

关于the worldpath

Essential skills for IELTS reading #2.
Scanning the text for specific information.

In the last post I talked about how to skim read an IELTS text and get the general context in order to understand the questions more.

This time we move on to scanning for specific information asked for in the questions. Here is the same text taken from “New insight into IELTS” about the undersea sounds and language of whales (see last video post)

The words which gave us the context when we did the skim reading last time have been underlined in orange in the title and the sub-heading. Now here are the questions:

1.        Why is sound so efficient underwater?
2.        What two ways do whales and dolphins use sound?
3.        What frequencies do they use?
4.        What sound range do they use for echolocation?

Ok, first we have underlined the key words in the questions – the words which tell us what information to read for. Next, we start at the beginning of the text and scan each line quickly to find where that information is in the text. Scanning is not reading, we do not try to understand every word, but we run our finger or our pen quickly along each line to find the information we are looking for.

This saves a lot of time in the reading test. Remember you only have 60 minutes to answer 40 questions. In the text above, scanning the first two paragraphs shows that there is no information in them that we need so scanning has saved us from wasting time with them.

Scanning the third paragraph gives results immediately. We see the words sound and efficient. We have now located where the answer to question one is. Reading more carefully around there we see the word as which here means because so we know the question “why” is about to be answered. The answer is underlined in blue – “ as it travels five times faster through water than through air.”
Got it? Now continue to scan for the answers to the other three questions.  Good luck.
