[About Prof. Hon Fai Chan’s research group]
Prof. Hon Fai Chan received his PhD degree from Duke University in 2015. From 2016 to 2017, he conducted postdoctoral research at Columbia University and MIT respectively. Starting from 2018, Prof. Chan will serve as an assistant professor jointly in the Institute of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine and School of Biomedical Science at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).
Prof. Hon Fai Chan (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=7c91ec4AAAAJ&hl=en)’s research group at CUHK has been focused on developing novel multiscale biomaterials/process for cell/tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. At the nanoscale, we develop nanoscale interface to understand how cell process (e.g. stem cell differentiation) is regulated by nanotopography. At the microscale, we fabricate small microcapsules using microfluidic system to encapsulate cells and ECM for tissue engineering, in particular for liver regeneration. We have also been working on developing new strategies (e.g. 3D printing) and biomaterial (e.g. tough and highly stretchable hydrogel) for engineering tissue/organ of the GI tract.
There are multiple fully funded Ph.D. positions available starting in Sept 2018 at Prof. Chan’s research group jointly in the Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine and School of Biomedical Science at CUHK. Students with majors in Biomedical Science, Biomedical Engineering, Biomaterials and Biotechnology are highly welcome to apply.
[About the Ph.D. Positions]:
The successful applicants will have the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research in the areas of tissue engineering, micro/nano-fabrication and regenerative medicine. The selected applicants will also have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers from other world-class universities. Postgraduate Studentships are available for full-time students. Students awarded studentships will receive stipends in return for assisting in the teaching and research work of the Graduate Division. The provisional monthly stipend for Postgraduate Studentship is around HKD $15,600- $16,140. More details can be found in this link (https://www.gs.cuhk.edu.hk/page/FeesandFinancialAids#a3). Postgraduate students are eligible to apply for residence at the Postgraduate Halls on campus.
[About CUHK]:

CUHK has been consistently regarded as a member of the top three higher learning institutions in the territory by various university rankings (QS World University Ranking: 46th, Times Higher Education World University Ranking: 76th, Shanghai Jiaotong ARWU: 151-200th). CUHK's medical school has been ranked as one of the top 50 medical schools in the world, despite its short history of 35 years as of 2016. CUHK is expecting its first and only private hospital to finish construction in 2021. It will serve to strength medical research programme in CUHK and provide valuable opportunities to translate laboratory research into clinical application.
