Issue26:The luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life prevent people from developing into truly strong and independent individuals.

The modern society has been blessed and cursed at the same time by a wide range of luxuries and conveniences made possible by advanced technologies. Whether people can remain strong and independent, physically and spiritually, while enjoying the luxurious and convenient goods or services depends on the attitudes we hold towards them. More specifically, it depends on whether we would allow the luxuries and conveniences to take over our lives.

Convenient tools ease people from unnecessary labor and help people save time. Take telephones for example. Telephone help people far from each other to communicate at real time. With its help, people do not have to cease what they are doing and travel a long distance to meet face to face, which saves a lot of time and energy thus making team work at a long distance possible. Without its help, it is unlikely for some people to study or work far away from their family, not to mention becoming a independent individual or getting empowered. With the conveniences offered by contemporary life, energy and time can be saved and make it possible for people to do something more challenge and more difficult. Without various powerful communication tools, it is unlikely for us to send probes to explore outer space.

While helping people a lot, it cannot be denied that luxuries and comfort life do make people lazy and dependent in those tools. The wide use of automobiles deprive modern people of physical exercise and become physically strong and independent. As more people enjoy the convenience of riding cars, we are getting more and more unwilling to walk somewhere not so far. Another example is the fast food, easy and fast to make, it
obstructs people from pursuing a healthy life style and becoming physically strong and independent. However, if some people are desired to become a strong and independent person, he may choose to go to gyms to get enough exercises and keep a healthy diet to keep his body fit, which compensates a lot to lack of exercise and healthy food due to modern life.

Finally, people from upper-middle often rely on luxuries to tell others they are rich, thereby confusing the extrinsic value of material goods from the intrinsic value of their own lives. The entire luxury market, relies on the premise that luxuries represent social position and attract other people who are successful to make friends with their hosts. People of upper class sometimes use luxuries as gifts to maintain their relationship as well as make new friends. But as people devote themselves to their careers in order to buy luxuries or other expensive but unnecessary goods, they fail to pursue things in life that really make them strong and independent such as good friends and quality family relationships.

In conclusion, luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life can help people save time and energy to develop more skills and ability thus making us more strong and independent if we use them in good ways and gain more opportunities for empowerment. On the other hand, they may prevent us from developing our physical strength and spiritual independence.
