b) US president’s plane en route from Washington DC to London, with the president on board, lost radio contact with the ground 15 minutes ago.
c) A passenger plane flying from Singapore to Beijing crashes in Vietnam. Early reports say no survivors among the 268 people on board.
d) A tropical cyclone has come ashore in the past 6 hours, along the coast of Myanmar. Vast areas of the coast are underwater, buildings and infrastructure are destroyed. Scores of deaths are certain, but numbers are unknown at this time.
7. In your opinion, how soon does a news development become “too old to be news”? (suggested word count: ~25)
8. You’re assigned to cover a charity golf tournament at an exclusive country club, an event which features white, black, Asian and Latino athletes. You find out that the club has a whites-only membership policy, although the issue hasn’t been raised by any of the celebrity golfers nor has there been any public criticism raised.
You are presented with two choices: Report the tournament without reference to the exclusionary policy, focusing on it solely as a charity event; Or include the fact that the players of colour wouldn’t be allowed to join the club, and seek comments from club officials and local activists who fight against discrimination.
