History is to the community, as memoryis to the individual. A man who suffers amnesia usually has difficulty inadjusting himself to other people, in finding his bearings, in takingintelligent decision about anything and even worse he lost his identity. So itis the same for a society without history. For this topic, I totally disagreewith the author’s opinion since the value of historical study is determined byother more important factors while whether historical study is relevant to ourdaily lives or not is just a not so significant component.

To begin with, I concede that therelevance between studying history and people’s daily life add value tohistorical study. Well organized historical records provide a way for us to knowhow people and societies functioned in the past, since we often encounter asituation which is similar in the past and by studying them we could get theinspiration and solution to the problem we encounter in our current life. Takethe economical crisis for example, we encounter economical crisis after acertain period of time and the lessons our predecessors learned and methods theyadopted in the past give us precious experience for the crisis at this stage.It is the trade protectionism in the 1940s which lead to the Great Depressionthus current leaders around the world vow to not to take trade protection toprevent the same situation happened again and it seems it works quite well atpresent.

However, in my opinion, other factorsare more important in determining the value of studying history. In the firstplace, history enables the society to take its bearings, to place itself inrelation to its own past, and in relation to other societies, and thus toestablish a sense of its identity. It is the open and energy of United Stateswhich distinguish her from conservative brothers and sisters across theAtlantic Ocean. Such gene of pursuing freedom and creativity has been runningin the blood of every US citizens. How such ‘gene’ is handed down from thepredecessors—by studying history. Just imagine a nation without the ability tolearning his past, doesn’t hold his own personality , he could only follow theculture of other society and is easily interfered to develop his own opinionwhich in turn make him be easily neglected.

Besides, a studyof history is essential for good citizenship. This is the most commonjustification for the place of history in school curricula. History thatlays the foundation for genuine citizenship returns, in one sense, to theessential uses of the study of the past. It offers evidence about how nationshave interacted with other societies, providing international and comparativeperspectives essential for responsible citizenship. Further, studying historyhelps us understand how recent, current, and prospective changes that affectthe lives of citizens are emerging or may emerge and what causes are involved.More important, studying history encourages habits of mind that are vital forresponsible public behavior, whether as a national or community leader, aninformed voter, a petitioner, or a simple observer.

To sum up, studying history is toprovide solution for problems in current life from a narrow sense and from abroad sense, studying history is important for a society to hand over hisculture and train his well-prepared citizen which is its real value.
