TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual
needs and interests of each student."
WORDS: 617          TIME: 00:50:16           DATE: 8/5/2009

Both Western and Eastern cultures value the significance of interest. Great scientist Einstein once said that interest is the best teacher. Chinese philosophist Confucius also holds the belief that students should be instructed and educated according to their own distinct interests. However, to satisfy each student's individual need and interest is not a sufficient or even realistic way through which education can be truly effective as the author states.

Nearly every new scientific discovery or innovations of art, music, technology is created based on the individual's interest in a certain subject. Interest can motivate people to work on a subject persistently and arduously, or generate the very inspiration to an advancement of a new invention. Take the founder of the Apple empire Steve Jobs as an example, he was extremely interested in calligraphy and how those beautiful fonts are created while he was studying at Reed College, California. Even after he dropped out of college, he continued auditing the calligraphy
class there. It is his interest in calligraphy that kept him in the class and later designed all the beautiful fonts on the first Macintosh computer. Apple computers are famous for its attractive design that differed them from other PCs, and it is Steve Job's interest in calligraphy that assured his success in making all these possible.

Admittedly, interest plays an important role of motivating students to learn. Nevertheless, it is unrealistic for every school to design its courses specifically in order to meet each student's individual needs and interests. Compared to the vast number of students, our educational resources are no doubt limited. Schools do not possess the funding or enough teachers to allow every student to choose whatever they are interested in. When there are still lliterate people, it is not reasonable for some schools to waste their educational resources to meet each
student's need and interest instead of making education more accessible to the needy.

Moreover, only meeting the individual needs and interests of each student does not guarantee an effective education. Education serves the function of not only teaching students knowledge of the academia, but also how to be a moral person, communicate and cooperate with other people and live within this society. A specialist with a ow moral standard will only be harmful to our society. Consider someone who is specialized in computer science but without moralities, how dangerous can it be if he were to hack or destroy the network system of a nation's national defense department or steal and sell these information to a foreign country?

To make education truly effective, schools should try their best to offer as many choices as possible to meet students needs and interests, and at the same time, require students to take subjects in a variety of disciplines. Liberal arts colleges in general are doing a great job in allowing students to explore what their interests are, and educating well-rounded students. For example, Middlebury college asks it students to take a certain number of classes in languages, natural sciences, history, and other disciplines outside a student's major to ensure that the student has knowledge in both his or her specific field as well as a variety of others.

To sum up, interest does play an important role in helping students to explore their passion and motivate them to study, yet emphasizing merely on the individual needs and interests will prevent students from exploring the outside world and be a well-rounded person. Besides, the resources we have today does not enable us to meet the needs and interests of every student. To make education effective, schools should both allow students to follow his or her interests, and make sure they have exposure to other disciplines.

The aim of education is to train a student to be a person with reasoning and critical thinking skills, the superior knowledge in a given area and the ability of making contribution to our society. Since individual interest and need play major role in students' learning, I generally accept the perspective that education will be effective when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of most student, however, we should avoid an air of self-righteousness.

To begin with, education concerning the individual interests of student can further stimulate them to learn more. The student are willing to spend copious amount of time in the course and relevant subjects which are interesting to particular individual, even the learning process may be endless boring. However, if they not, their enthusiasm of study will dramatically drop. The student who likes physics and mathematics will consider the study of course on western culture and literature a waste of time and energy. Luckily, optional courses system is introduced in modern education. For one thing, this system is proved to be successful in improve the efficiency of study because the students are learning the course they like. For another, some students, who do not hone in on its like and dislike can find where their aptitude lies while selecting their course. In sum, people have realized the importance of interest in learning, and have made some remarkable success on designing such education, like optional course system, to fulfill students' interest.

In addition, the level of education can further rise if education meets distinctive needs of students, especially the giftedness. Giftedness, are the students who show excellence performance in an early age in the area of art, science, technology, sport and so on. If we teach these giftedness with the same method as the normal students, they will find they can not enhance their ability in their strong field and therefore become normal in the future. The reason why China win many Olympic medal in these years is due to the special training of athletes, who shows great talent in sports very early, and more importantly are identified by their coach and are received the special training in their childhood. Considering the benefits of sports training which meets the individual needs, the education designed to individual students can explore their skills and talent as far as possible.

However, emphasizing the benefits of education designed to individual too much will pose potential threat to the whole round development of children and education system. Firstly, since some students do not like mathematics, should we allow them not to learn mathematics? The outcome will be disaster, that without learning mathematics, hardly can a person process logical thinking and symbolic knowledge, both of which play vital role in further education and can only be gained through mathematics. Secondly, owing to the limited resource of education, the education meets each individual student is unrealistic. Teaching a course needs so much preparation, including the teacher of certain area, the textbook and labotory equipment, that we must be cautious when making the decision to open a special course for the needs of individual. If we pay much attention to the special education of individual, general students are not able to get enough education

To sum up, the education designed to individual leads to the more interest in learning, which stimulate students to learn more and the quick development of those giftedness. Nevertheless, by citing the limited resource of education and the whole round development of children, this kind of education is effective but unrealistic.

In this era of rapid social and technological change, each nation puts more and more emphasis on education so as to keep pace of the change. How can the education be effective satisfying the needs of the development of the nation? Since everyone may have different background, different interest, and different dream and so on, the most appropriate education meeting their individual needs and interests should be specifically designed. However, the limitations exist in that the resources of education a nation can provide is not enough and the development of the society needs students studying some specific curriculums, such as morality, math, and so on, so that the students can develop themselves to be a person in accordance of the society.

An educational system that can take into account the specific needs and interest of each student will help the students to fully develop their distinct potential and interest. In such an educational system, students, feeling centered and appreciated, will be more motivated to study. As we all know, interest is the best teacher. For instance, when Yao Ming was a child, he was most interests in archeology, so every time he was free, he sat and read books of archeology. One time that he gained his wages from his sports team of Shanghai, he bought books he liked. As time went by, when he was twelve years old, he become interested in basketball and since then he worked hard and improved himself. Due to his great effort, he becomes a member of NBA, the best basket league in the world, and even a super star. Someone may argue that all his achievements results from his born advantage of body, but there are a lot of people higher than Yao remaining unknown to us short of achievements.

People may take for granted that the more specifically designed education one can get according his/her own needs and interests, the more effective it will turn out to be, since students will be much more actively engaged in study without the necessity to learn what does not interest them, or what seems to be of no apparent help to their future careers. Reasonable as it may seem, such an education pattern does not make full use of modern educational resources. At different stage of their life of the students, they may have different interests and needs which are too various to be met, not to mention that some of them may not know what they are fond of. Thus, comparing with the large amount of the students, the educational resources are limited, even short. It is obvious that complete liberty designing education to meet the interests and needs is unrealistic.

Even if education resources is abound, specifically designed education should not take the place of the traditional general education. Madison once said that, the competing, balancing interests of a diverse people can help ensure the survival of liberty. But there are values that all American citizens share that we should want all students to know and to make their own: honesty, fairness, self-discipline, fidelity to task, friends, and family, personal responsibility, love of a country, and belief in the principle of liberty, equality, and freedom to practice one’s faith.

Although complete liberty in designing education is not available to all individual students, school can try their best to offer more choices and autonomy to students as long as the quality of compulsory education is guaranteed. Students maximize their energy to function in the society if they can develop their ability by the motivation of their interests. Without interests, students may only work out their tasks commonly, short of creative ideas. Thus, school should take their interests into consideration by providing more selected course covering as many fields as they can.

To sum up, the most effective educational system that can be carried out during our time not only includes the traditional general system providing the basic and comprehensive skills for the students, but also should make the best effort to offer choices and autonomy to students meeting their individual needs and interests. Only in this way, can the nation develop steadily, smoothly and rapidly, so that more contribution on can be devoted to the progress and prosperity of human beings.

正面支持的例子:can inspire every student's potential ability
