TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars andresearchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes acontribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue theirindividual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests mayseem."

When it comes to the question that which ofthe two--contribution made to the society and personal interest-- should begiven priority by scholars and researchers, I share the same belief with thespeaker that we should attach more importance to individual interests. Here aremy reasons.

To start with, the assumption that we could tell insightfully which research could make a greater contribution is unsubstantiated. When Edison first introduced electricity to the world, most people, including some authoritative scientists at that time, simply refuse not believesuch invention could be of any use. They mocked at Edison and urge him to showthem electricity's use.Edison, repliedwith great wisdom, said (and I paraphrase) how can we predict how great a manwill become when he is only a newly born baby. Looking back at history, many researchers, which bring great benefit to the whole human society, are not originally intended to bring such result. All too often we witness an initiator open a door due to his own interest and with more and more curious people entering it, a new path to an undiscovered land is finally build. Yet the initiator must be very surprised when he found what he has brought about--as the founder of the molecular structure of DNA Watson and Crick did at the process of genetic engineering. In conclusion, since on most occasions it is impossible to predict which research will bring us the greatest benefit, we shouldn't demand the scholars and scientists to pursue what we suppose to bring greatcontribution.

Another reason lies in that personal interest, rather than a sense of responsibility to the society, could maximizethe possibility for an individual to really achieve something. The greatestscientist of 20 century, founder of the theory of relativity, Albert Einsteinonce said that (and I paraphrase) interest is the greatest teacher. Xu Zhihong, former president of Beijing University, agreed with this saying, added that interest could make the challenging journey an excitment instead of a suffering, which will help us survive the hard times when we almost can not hold on--A strong sense of responsibility to the society is admirable, but it is not as strong as an exhilarant as interest when it comes to doing a tough research. In conclusion, if we force scientists to do certain researches they are not interested in under the name of better benefiting the society, chances are that their precious time and energy will be wasted on something much less likely to fruit and what they could have brought to the society will never be fulfilled. What a loss.

As I mentioned above, individual interest plays a very important role in making a research and should be given priorities to, however, admittedly, on some occasions--like when it concerns the survivalof the whole human beings--the contribution to the larger society should beconsidered first. How can a resource expert ignore the fact that the whole world is faced with resources crisis and many wars are waged for it, causing great disasters and pains when he determines his study will has nothing to do with this? How can a climate expert overlook the fact that many coastal citiesare swallowed by the each-day higher sea level when he choose what research he will carry on? How could a microbiologist concentrate on own his study deep in the laboratory regardless of the fact that the outside world is threatened witha fatal contagious disease caused by a microbe which possibly could only bedealt with by him? If the human civilization is ruined, what's the point of making great discoveries?

In conclusion, except on some specialoccasions, i firmly hold the belief that scientists and scholars should always pursue their individual interests rather than a greater contribution to the society. May god grant themthe opportunity to pursuit individual interests, the courage to take theresponsibility when the society needs them, and the wisdom to tell the difference.

When it comes to the question that which of the two--contribution made to the society and personal interest-- should be given priority by scholars and researchers, I share the same belief with the speaker that we should attach more importance to individual interests. Here are my reasons.

To start with, the assumption that we could tell insightfully which research could make a greater contribution is unsubstantiated.(读着很奇怪啊,缺成分么) When Edison first introduced electricity to the world, most people, including some authoritative scientists at that time, simply refuse not (to)believe such invention could be of any use. Yet the initiator must be very surprised when he found what he has brought about--as the founder of the molecular structure of DNA ,Watson and Crick ,did at the process of genetic engineering. In conclusion, since on most occasions it is impossible to predict which research will bring us the greatest benefit, we shouldn't demand the scholars and scientists to pursue what we suppose to bring greatcontribution.(论证--例子---再论证---在例子的结构有点奇怪,可以再深入些,为什么研究结果会不确定为什么人们会不认同。)

Xu Zhihong, former president of Beijing (PeKing) University, agreed with this saying, added that interest could make the challenging journey an excitment instead of a suffering, which will help us survive the hard times when we almost can not hold on(尽量避免中国例子,ETS考官觉得缺少说服力)--A strong sense of responsibility to the society is admirable, but it is not as strong as an exhilarant as interest when it comes to doing a tough research. In conclusion, if we force scientists to do certain researches they are not interested in under the name of better benefiting the society, chances are that their precious time and energy will be wasted on something much less likely to fruit and what they could have brought to the society will never be fulfilled. What a loss.

As I mentioned above, individual interest plays a very important role in making a research and should be given priorities to, however, admittedly, on some occasions--like when it concerns the survivalof the whole human beings--the contribution to the larger society should beconside red first. If the human civilization is ruined, what's the point of making great discoveries?(正式文体中尽量少用反问句,不是演讲。可以改为陈述句或设问句)

(这个语气……)

issue 是议论文,用论证说服人,文章的基调像是在演讲,深入的分析比号召性的语言更重要。如果分析的在深入些就更好了,指出每个论点的前因后果,比单用例子和排比更有效。^.^
