TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

Should scholars or researchers concentrate on their interests or the question whether their working benefit the society? In my opinion, the claim that the scholars should only be concerned on their interests is unfair, however it's actually important for them to be engaged in their interests accounting for the difficulties in judging whether their works could contribute to the society in the future and the roles the individual interests play in researching.

Admittedly, the researches in certain fields should take the consequence in account. The works, before being applied into practice, call for supports from the society, thus it's obligations of the scholars to contribute to the large society ultimately. Those significant achievements in the fields of research are mostly recognized by their contribution to the society, such as the recognition of the quantum physics, the value of which is finally proved by its application to IT industry, and then the scientists are regarded as great. In another word, if the result of the study is proved to be meaningless, such achievement could not be labeled as success, such as the Space.星际战争

However, for most researches, especially the fundamental fields, the results of them are hard to anticipate so too much attention of the conductors paid to the question whether their work is beneficial is harmful. After all, the researches are, to some extent, another form of exploration, just like adventures into an unknown forest. Too much emphasis on the contribution would leads to hesitation and ultimate stagnation toward the truth and success.

For instance, there was skeptic concerning the values of discovery of large prime integer before, while it's proved to be meaningful due to its application into compiling codes. In addition, something seemed useless might be dispensable factors in the prospective researches which could improve the industry, such as the application of the mathematic into computer science. Thus the researches deserve intensive focus despite the uncertainty of the benefit.

What's more, it's the interests rather than the concerns about the contribution to the large society that could motivate them to inspect into certain fields. Accepted of not, humanity is such a species that are more inclined to decided by individual interests including material and spiritual instead of the whole interest. And interests are indispensable factors in promote the procedures of study without which little could be brought about by certain institution. After all, study and researches are works which could bring about loneliness if the individuals has no interests in them. Thus, before taking part in the study, it's essential to evaluate the enthusiasm of the individuals rather than the anticipated or unanticipated results.

In summary, it's important for the researchers to be more concerned with their interests to attain achievement, even though it's the sense of responsibility of them for society that ensure their works is at least not harmful for the society.
