Issue 82

Colleges and universities should require their students to spend at least one semester studying in a foreign country.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.

I agree that this recommendation would be beneficial for students specialising in certain disciplines such as foreign languages, international trade and comparative politics.  Yet, students in other fields such as national language and literature, history and archeology would find the requirement unnecessary.  Moreover, students with limited financial resources or abilities to adapt to the new environment may not benefit from the recommendation.

I agree that this recommendation would be beneficial for students specialising in certain disciplines such as foreign languages, international trade and comparative politics.
同意转换:this recommendation would be beneficial for 如果改成benefit怎么写 如果改成students做主语又怎么写
Be beneficial for = Benefit
Students specializing in certain disciplines would benefit from the recommendation.

Yet, students in other fields such as national language and literature, history and archeology would find the requirement unnecessary. Moreover, students with limited financial resources or abilities to adapt to the new environment may not benefit from the recommendation.
unnecessary  may not benefit from
others: may be not advisable  unwise ill-advised
练习
129) College students should base their choice of a field of study on the availability of jobs in that field.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.

This recommendation would be unnecessary for students who have efficient economic resources. Moreover, students who are especially talented would not benefit from this recommendation either. Nevertheless, for students under huge economic pressure, this requirement is advisable.

Students who have little economic pressure would find this recommendation unnecessary since they have little bondage and apprehensions to choose majors according to their hobbies than those students in poor families.

For students who are especially gifted in some specific fields, this requirement is not beneficial either. They may have a greater chance to get a desirable job in the future if they choose to major in the field they are talented at.

However, it’s an advisable recommendation for students under huge economic pressure since it’s highly important for them to find a job with considerable salary to improve their economic conditions.

Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented.

Argument 6 deer population drop

6) Arctic deer live on islands in Canada's arctic regions. They search for food by moving over ice from island to island during the course of the year. Their habitat is limited to areas warm enough to sustain the plants on which they feed and cold enough, at least some of the year, for the ice to cover the sea separating the islands, allowing the deer to travel over it. Unfortunately, according to reports from local hunters, the deer populations are declining. Since these reports coincide with recent global warming trends that have caused the sea ice to melt, we can conclude that the purported decline in deer populations is the result of the deer's being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea.

According to the argument, the decline in deer populations was caused by the climate changes that prevented the deer from migrating across the frozen sea for food. We need further evidence about the actual changes in deer population, the local climate and the conditions of the ice as well as the environment of deer in order to decide if this argument is reasonable.

ts 1 We need more information about the actual changes in deer population to assess how reliable the hunters’ reports are.

ts 2 More evidence about the local climate and the conditions of frozen sea is necessary to know if the deer can still follow the age-old migration patterns for food.

ts 3 Another issue for further investigation is whether there are other environmental factors that might lead to reduction in deer populations.

2) To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

thesis

The most important characteritics of a society include its political system, economic structure and the public school system. To understand each of the aspects of the society, it is important to study its major cities as well as smaller towns and the rural areas because the political, economic and educational institutions differ greatly among major cities, small towns and rural areas.

The most important characteritics of a society include its political system, economic structure and the public school system. To understand each of the aspects of the society, it is important to study its major cities as well as smaller towns and the rural areas because the political, economic and educational institutions differ greatly among major cities, small towns and rural areas.

The political system of a society is often shaped by the economic and cultural dynamics of the local communities as well as the nation as a whole.  To the extent that the politics is influenced by the national institutions such as the Constitution, it is sufficient to study how people in the major cities are involved in political activities. To understand the presidential election of the US, for example, one can follow the presidential candidates as they tour the major cities during their campaigns and investigate how the city residents make their decisions regarding the different candidates and how they think about the major issues covered in the debate among the candidates.  Nevertheless, an important dimension of the modern society is the diversity of political activities one can observe in the local communities. Voters in a small village in a Southern United State may think very differently about a particular issue compared to voters in New York. Therefore, to fully understand the politics of the society, one has to study the rural areas and small towns as well.

In addition to political system, economic development is another aspect one should not overlook in order to understand the society.  Usually the major cities provide the physical space for economic activities that are important the society. For example, international stock markets are located in major cities such as New York, London and Hong Kong.  To understand the economics of a society, one needs to study how the financial industries operate in such major cities. On the other hand, small villages and counties also play vital roles in the national economy with their contribution to difference economic sectors such as agriculture and tourism.  Therefore, studying the major cities alone is not sufficient to fully understand the economy of the entire society.

Finally, to fully understand the most important characteristics of a society, one should also study how the public school systems work.  In many societies, the public school systems differ greatly among rural areas, suburbs and big cities as the public schools often respond to the different needs of the local communities. In the rural areas, given the schoolchildren’s extensive experiences with the agriculture, the public schools will include more courses related to agriculture in the curriculum. In the suburbs, with most schoolchildren from the middle class, the public schools may teach more courses that are ideologically oriented towards the middle classes. In the major cities, with schoolchildren more likely coming from lower socioeconomic classes, the public school teachers may emphasize a different set of values and skills in their classrooms.  Therefore, to fully understand how the public school work in the society, one has to study the major cities as well as rural and suburban areas.

In conclusion, to understand the political, economic and educational development of a society, it is important to study the major cities as well as the countryside and the suburban areas where people from different socioeconomic classes are engaged in different political, economic and educational activities.

To understand the modern society and investigate its most prominent features, we should definitely focus our attention on its major cities because the major cities usually develop models and patterns that would be copied or imitated by other cities, counties and rural areas through institutions such as patent, chain stores and organisational learning.  I would illustrate my position through three major aspects of a society: the use of technologies, the retail industry and higher education.

There is no doubt that, to understand a society, we need to look into how technologies are used among the people. To do that, we only need to do research in major cities.  For example, if we want to investigate how people use electronic devices to make payments, we should observe people in the major cities and interview them about their preferences and perceptions of the technology.  Since the e-payment system usually involves patented technologies that can be transferred to other areas, the patterns of customer behaviours observed in major cities will be found in smaller cities, counties and even rural areas sooner or later. In the area of technology usage, people living in major cities can serve as suitable subjects for case studies.

Another important characteristic of modern society is the development of retail industry, i.e. how consumer products are marketed and sold.  Again, we only need to study the major cities to understand how retail industry works.  One of the major institutions in retail industry is chain store through which major brand name corporations sell their products in similar ways around the world.  To know how Louis Vuitton promotes its products, there is no need to travel to different places all over the world. Just visiting the main shops in a few major cities, we will have a basic idea of the marketing strategies of the company. To save costs in operation, companies like LV would reuse their ideas for promoting products in other areas.

Finally, we can also understand the higher education in a given society through studying the major universities usually located in the major cities. Since universities are usually following a set of standards and guidelines in designing their curriculums and delivering their courses, the practices of major universities in major cities can be studied as representative cases to generate research insights that are usually applicable to similar universities in other areas.  Through student exchange programs and visiting professorship, universities also learn from one another at institutional level and become more alike in how they operate.  As a result, it is sufficient to study universities in major cities to understand the main features of higher education.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that major cities can serve as representative cases for studying the important characteristics of our society because in other cities and areas people often learn the best practices that have been developed in major cities.

http://bbs.gter.net/thread-1481123-1-1.html

It might seem logical, at first glance, to agree with the argument in Dr. Karp’s article
that children in Tertia actually are raised by their biological parents (and perhaps even,
by implication, that an observation-centered approach to anthropological study is
not as valid as an interview-centered one). However, in order to fully evaluate this
argument, we need to have a significant amount of additional evidence. The argument
could end up being much weaker than it seems, or it might actually be quite valid. In
order to make that determination, we need to know more then analyze what we learn.

The first piece of evidence that we would need in order to evaluate Dr. Karp’s claims
is information about whether or not Tertia and the surrounding island group have
changed significantly in the past 20 years. Dr. Field conducted his observational study
20 years ago, and it is possible that Tertia has changed significantly since then. For
example, if we had evidence that in teh intervening years Westerners had settled on
the island and they introduced a more typical Western-style family structure, it would
certainly weaken Dr. Karp’s argument. In that case, the original study could have been
accurate, and Dr. Karp’s study could be correct, as well, though his conclusion that Dr.
Field’s method is ineffective would be seriously weakened.

Another piece of evidence that might help us evaluate this claim involves the exact
locations where Dr. Karp’s interviews took place. According to this article, Dr. Karp and
his graduate students conducted interviews of “children living in the group of islands
that includes Tertia.” If we were to learn that they never interviewed a single Tertian
child, it would significantly weaken the conclusion. It could turn out to be the case, for
example, that children on Tertia are raised communally, whereas children on other
islands nearby are raised by their biological parents.

In order to fully evaluate this article, we would also need to learn more about the
interview questions that Dr. Karp’s team used. What exactly did they ask? We don’t
know, nor do we know what the children’s responses actually were. What did they say
about their biological parents? The mere fact that they speak more frequently about
their biological parents than they do about other adults does not meant hat they are
raised by their biological parents. It would significantly undermine Dr. Karp’s argument
if it turned out that the children said things like how much they missed their parents or
how their parents had left them in a communal environment. Without knowing WHAT
the children said, it is hard to accept Dr. Karp’s conclusion.

It is slightly more difficult to discuss the evidence we might need in order to
evaluate the more interesting claims in Dr. Karp’s article, namely his extension of the
results of his study to a conclusion that interview-centered methods are inherently
more valid than observational-centered approaches. In order to fully evaluate this
claim, in fact, we would need to look at many more examples of interview-based and
observation-based anthropological studies and we would also need to look into
different study designs. Perhaps Dr. Field did not conduct an effective observational
study, but other observational approaches could be effective. In order to make such
grandiose claims, Dr. Karp really needs a lot of additional evidence (ideally a meta -
analysis of hundreds of anthropological studies).

Clearly, then, we need to have additional evidence in order to get a more complete
understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of Dr. Karp’s article. We need to know
about Tertia and the surrounding islands, whether or not they have changed over the
past 20 years. We also need to know about study design (Dr. Karp’s and Dr. Field’s).
And we really need a lot more information if we want to extend the results of a study
about one island culture to all anthropological fieldwork.

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
