Task 1- report writing. Past tense.

It is important before you start writing your report that you spend about a minute carefully reading the question and diagram to make sure you understand it correctly. This will enable you to write more correctly and confidently when you start the report.

One of the things to look for is whether there are any years in the question and diagram. If there are years, they will always be past years, so your description of the trends in the diagram need to be in past tense.

In 2010 the trend ROSE SHARPLY to 50% of the population. NOT rise.

Sometimes the diagram and question contain no years. This kind is about what happens usually or regularly so you answer in present tense.

The majority of the UK population ( 76% ) drive personal vehicles to work.

However, most  IELTS report questions require past tense, so watch out for the years .
