Argument 15/51/130/131/133

Arg 15 replace butter with margarine

15) The following memorandum is from the business manager of Happy Pancake House restaurants.

Recently, butter has been replaced by margarine in Happy Pancake House restaurants throughout the southwestern United States. This change, however, has had little impact on our customers. In fact, only about 2 percent of customers have complained, indicating that an average of 98 people out of 100 are happy with the change. Furthermore, many servers have reported that a number of customers who ask for butter do not complain when they are given margarine instead. Clearly, either these customers do not distinguish butter from margarine or they use the term 'butter' to refer to either butter or margarine.

Write a response in which you discuss one or more alternative explanations that could rival the proposed explanation and explain how your explanation(s) can plausibly account for the facts presented in the argument.

51) The following memorandum is from the business manager of Happy Pancake House restaurants.

Butter has now been replaced by margarine in Happy Pancake House restaurants throughout the southwestern United States. Only about 2 percent of customers have complained, indicating that 98 people out of 100 are happy with the change. Furthermore, many servers have reported that a number of customers who ask for butter do not complain when they are given margarine instead. Clearly, either these customers cannot distinguish butter from margarine or they use the term 'butter' to refer to either butter or margarine. Thus, to avoid the expense of purchasing butter and to increase profitability, the Happy Pancake House should extend this cost-saving change to its restaurants in the southeast and northeast as well.

Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.

130) The following memorandum is from the business manager of Happy Pancake House restaurants.

Butter has now been replaced by margarine in Happy Pancake House restaurants throughout the southwestern United States. Only about 2 percent of customers have filed a formal complaint, indicating that an average of 98 people out of 100 are happy with the change. Furthermore, many servers have reported that a number of customers who ask for butter do not complain when they are given margarine instead. Clearly, either these customers cannot distinguish butter from margarine or they use the term 'butter' to refer to either butter or margarine. Thus, to avoid the expense of purchasing butter, the Happy Pancake House should extend this cost-saving change to its restaurants throughout the rest of the country.

Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

131) The following memorandum is from the business manager of Happy Pancake House restaurants.

Butter has now been replaced by margarine in Happy Pancake House restaurants throughout the southwestern United States. Only about 2 percent of customers have complained, indicating that an average of 98 people out of 100 are happy with the change. Furthermore, many servers have reported that a number of customers who ask for butter do not complain when they are given margarine instead. Clearly, either these customers cannot distinguish butter from margarine or they use the term 'butter' to refer to either butter or margarine. Thus, we predict that Happy Pancake House will be able to increase profits dramatically if we extend this cost-saving change to all our restaurants in the southeast and northeast as well.

Write a response in which you discuss one or more alternative explanations that could rival the proposed explanation and explain how your explanation(s) can plausibly account for the facts presented in the argument.

Thus, to avoid the expense of purchasing butter and to increase profitability, the Happy Pancake House should extend this cost-saving change to its restaurants in the southeast and northeast as well.

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

The business manager of HPH argues that replacing butter with margarine had little influence on their customers based on his interpretations and explanations of two observations: 1) only 2% of customers complained; 2) customers did not complain about the replacement according to the servers. To assess the impact of the change on customer satisfaction, we need to explore other possible explanations for the observed facts about low complaint rates or the lack of complaints reported by the staff.

最后这句话可以写成回应explanation这类写作指引的套话-To evaluate the argument critically, we need to explore other alternative explanations for the facts observed and presented.。 To assess the impact of the change on customer satisfaction, we need to explore other possible explanations for the observed facts about low complaint rates or the lack of complaints reported by the staff.

Given the fact that only 2% of the customers complained about margarine used to replace butter, the manager believes that 98% of the customers are happy with the replacement. But there might be other reasons why complaint rate was only 2%. For example, perhaps the only way for the customers to complain about the change in the restaurant was to speak to the restaurant staff directly, which the customers may feel reluctant to do for fear of embarrassment or confrontation. If the restaurant had a Facebook page accepting complaints from the customers, the complaint rate might be much higher. Indeed, the customers may have already complained about the change in social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, which the restaurant is not fully aware of.

Another possible explanation for the relatively low complaint rate is that the restaurant has done a decent job overall serving the customers. The food was generally delicious and the service was very good. As a result, the customers chose not to complain about the change of butter. But the lack of complaints should not be interpreted as the customers being satisfied with the change without stronger evidence to support such an interpretation.

As for the servers report of few complaints after failing to deliver the order, the author believes that the customers did not complain because they made no distinction between the two labels - butter or margarine.  There are also a number of alternative explanations we need to consider. Maybe the servers chose to withhold information about the complaints they received from the customers in order to look good to the management of HPH. More information about the reliability and validity of the servers' reports about receiving complaints is needed to decide if the customers expressed unhappiness about the change of ingredients.  In addition, as mentioned earlier, there are other ways for customers to express their negative feelings about the food.  They might complain about the fake butter in social networking sites or simply choose a different restaurant.

Overall speaking, the explanations offered by the author for the low complaint rates and the lack of complaints according to the staff may or may not be valid.  There are other alternative explanations related to the other channels of complaining or expressing dissatisfaction or the reliability of the staff reporting complaints that should be further investigated to assess the strength of the argument.

In the memo, the manager recommends that the replacement of butter by margerine should be extended to the restaurants in other areas of the US considering the fact that only 2% of the customers complained about the change and the staff also reported no customer complained when served margarine.  A number of questions need to be raised and addressed regarding the reasons why so few customers complained, how the staff reported complaints from customers and the characteristics of customers in the other parts of the US.

The manager argues that 98% of the customers must be happy with the change of ingredient since only 2% complained.  Key questions with regard to how customers may express their unhappiness about the food need to be answered.  For example, are there alternative channels for the customers to complain? Perhaps the customers do not want to complain directly to the staff to avoid confrontation but choose to complain in social networking sites which may lead to more damage to the reputation of the company.  Or the customers unhappy about the change may simply vote by feet and choose to dine in other restaurants.  Information about whether customers might complain or express their dissatisfaction in other ways is important for further assess the recommendation.

More questions about how the staff received and reported complaints from the customers should also be asked.  According to the memo, the server reported no complaints from the customers when they were served margerine despite their order of butter.  Is it possible for the server to fail to report complaints in order to avoid penalty from the management? Is there mechanism in place to ensure the complaints made by the customers are properly recorded and reported?  Answers to these questions would help us decide if there were indeed no complaints from the customers.  In addition, we need to know whether customers complained under other circumstances. For example, customers who did not order butter may complain about the margarine because they assumed butter would be served.  Information about such complaints that were not discussed in the argument would be useful to further evaluate the recommendation.

Finally, we need to ask questions about the characteristics of the customers in the restaurants where the change of ingredients may be introduced.  How are the customers in these restaurants different or similar compared to the restaurants where changes had occurred in terms of taste for butter?   If the customers in the new restaurants have stronger preference for butter or are more sensitive to the difference between butter and margarine, the proposed changes may lead to more customer complaints and even decrease of profits in the new restaurants.

In conclusion, it is not clear if the recommendation about the change of ingredient would lead to the reduction of costs and the increase of profits.  More questions discussed above regarding the different channels of complaining, the mechanism of reporting complaints by the staff and the characteristics of customers in the new restaurants have to be answered in order to evaluate the argument.
