If there's no good research master programs in finance, it's actually better to take, say, a maste ...
A statistics master is also fine...i will put it slightly after a economics one.
In a good economocs master, one can have all those micro theory course, and then also enough econometrics training, and exposure to financial economics, and researcher doing that.
A statistica master will train the quantiative skills really well, but one will lack:
1. econ theory, e.g. micro theory that is need for finance
2. Reference letter. Not that bad....but it is easier to find researcher in econ to be closer to finance than that in mathematics/statistics.
(and master stat....indeed is now losing ground to various data science and machine learning type master, not only in the job market, but also research somehow: mathematical / traditional statistics is of course important, but as it is well developed field, and thus it is way more difficult there......)
If one is planning to do something like financial econometrics or quantitative finance, thats a good idea to take statistics instead of econ. Just like taking QF instead of econ is good for those planning to work on the mathematical side of finance. But there are much more other topics in finance that is not that mathematical/statistical.....
While talking economics, especially micro and econometrics (not to mentiom asset pricing and empirical finance are courses of a econ master as elective but not likely for statistics, is useful in almost every field of finance, and indeed being core course of most major of a phd in business....so i will say thats even more important.
And dont forget that it is not rare to put econ and fina together in a phd program, but it is quite uncommon to put finance and statistics into one program (phd in econ & fina as one program is way more common than phd in stat & fina)
Indeed, the market prefer a mixture between econ and stat for this purpose(phd application, fina): just go for a quantitative econ master an get both, done.
The key point here is to go to a econ master from a school with a strong econometric, and financial econ faculty, coursework....
想搞econ某subfield(e.g. finance, monetary, trade, or etc.....)
