The Chemistry Department at UND seeks a full-time, Post-Doctoral Researcher for an initial 12-month period, with a possibility of extension, depending on funding availability and annual review.

The UND Chemistry Department is located in Abbot Hall, which houses 29 laboratories and classrooms and is home to over 30 faculty and student offices, including space that provides modern teaching and research facilities within the state of North Dakota and surrounding regions. The Department is well equipped for ongoing research performed by individual faculty and is funded by external grants from the National Science Foundation, ND EPSCOR, PRF ACS, and other agencies. Instrumentation utilized by the department is modern and extensive and enables externally funded high quality research. Major equipment in the Department includes: a new ICAP-Q  Inductively Coupled Plasma with Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS), a Bruker AVANCE 500 high-field superconducting nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer (with multinuclear solution capability), a Siemens P-4 single crystal X-ray diffractometer, a Scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) Hitachi SU8010, an Agilent high resolution time of flight mass spectrometer (MS) with optional high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), a number of gas chromatographs (GC) and GC-MS instruments, several FT-IR spectrometers, flame absorption and ICP with mass spectrometer, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectrometers, a Jasco-J810 Spectropolarimeter, and numerous other specialized instruments used by individual faculty members and their students.

Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will have strong written communication skills for writing proposals and manuscripts. The successful candidate will conduct research on synthesis and development of novel nanoparticles and the combination of nanoparticles with surfactants for enhanced oil recovery in tight formations and will work in both the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Petroleum Engineering.

Major responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Development of new nanomaterials for enhanced oil recovery
Modification of nanoparticles with surfactants for enhanced oil recovery in tight formations
Characterization of various properties of the nanomaterials
Using Various methods of characterization of Bakken Core Samples
Writing research proposals to federal agencies
Writing research manuscripts for publications
Advise graduate students and undergraduate students on their research projects.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:  
Ph.D in Chemistry, Petroleum Engineering, or related fields
Training in synthesis and design of new nanomaterials
Training in enhanced oil field recovery
Experience in the characterization of Bakken Core Samples
High quality, peer-reviewed publications  
Experience advising graduate students and undergraduate students in research

Preferred Skills/Desirable Qualifications:
Experience with using SEM, TEM, XRD, surface area analyzer, particle size analyzer, and/or other similar instrumentation
Experience with various characterization methods for tight formations
Experience with application of surfactants in enhanced oil recovery
