Multiple Research Assistantship (M.S/Ph.D.) student positions starting from Fall’ 18/Spring’ 19 are available for self-motivated students who are interested in pursuing M.S/Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND. The successful candidates will work with Dr. Dong Cao and his group to do high quality research in power electronics, wide bandgap (GaN/SiC) devices applications, renewable energy power systems, plug-in/hybrid/battery electrified vehicle, and smart grid related applications.

Candidates with solid backgrounds in Power Electronics, Wide bandgap devices, Motor Drive, or Grid Connected Control are especially encouraged to apply. The Graduate School requires a minimum TOEFL score of 525 (paper-based) or 71 (Internet-based). The minimum required IELTS score is 6. Students with TOEFL score higher than 81 with Speaking 23 and Writing 21 are preferred. The GRE is not strictly required and may be waived for students who have strong endorsement from Dr. Dong Cao.

Dong Cao received the B.S. degree from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou China, in 2005 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Michigan State University, East Lansing USA, in 2010 and 2012, respectively. He worked at Ford Motor Company as a power electronics core engineer for hybrid electric vehicle electrified driveline hardware development from 2012 ~ 2014. He joined North Dakota State University as an assistant professor since Aug. 2014. His research interests include wide bandgap devices applications, switched-capacitor dc-dc converter, soft-switching, multilevel converters/inverters, Z-source inverter/converters, HEV applications, power conversion for distributed energy sources, and intelligent gate drive for high power devices. He received two prize paper awards from the IEEE Industry Applications Society Industrial Power Converter Committee in 2010 and 2011. He is the recipient of the outstanding presentation award at Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC) 2010. He received the prize poster award at IEEE Energy Conversion Congress & Exposition (ECCE) 2011. His research has been funded by multiple sources, such as Google, NSF, NASA, ND Department of Commerce, Maxir Venture, Transphorm, John Deere, Ford, Navitas Semiconductor etc.
