Open Position: PhD Graduate Research Assistant_
Department: Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering

Start Date: January 2019 or September 2019
We are seeking a PhD student to work at Sustainable Geotransportation/Geoenvironmental
Infrastructure Research Group at George Mason University (https://geotrans.vse.gmu.edu/home).
The new research project is focused on coupled thermal-chemical-hydraulic behavior of
bentonite-polymer composite. Experimental work is the main component of the project,
including development of new laboratory instruments to measure the hydraulic conductivity of
bentonite-polymer composite at variable thermal and chemical conditions. Modeling will be
developed to predict the hydraulic conductivity of bentonite-polymer composite at different
conditions. The results will help to understand the fundamental mechanisms that controlling the
hydraulic barrier behavior of bentonite-polymer composite.
Student with a M.S. degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or a related field (must be
completed at the time of hire) is preferred. The candidate will be expected to design and conduct
the experiment and develop modeling for this project.
