Question 7 of 10
What do you believe was the most important news story in 2018 and why? (Around 30 words)
Question 8 of 10
Briefly compare and contrast the media coverage of a major, global news story in 2018 that you believe was reported VERY DIFFERENTLY by media in the West (U.S/Europe) and media in the East (Asia).
(Around 100 words)
Question 9 of 10
The term “Fake News” has been used to describe information that is probably false and/or misleading. It has also been used by some politicians to describe news reports that are factually true, but unflattering to them. Provide an example of the latter, in which a world leader has called a FACTUALLY TRUE STORY “fake news.”
(Around 50 words )
Question 10 of 10
In the following hypothetical scenario, which course of action would you choose? Select only one answer and briefly explain your choice. (Around 30 words)
You are an online news reporter covering a civil protest. You watch as a protestor throws a rock at a police officer wearing protective gear. The rock hits the police officer but does not injure him. He responds by beating the protestor with his police baton until the protestor falls unconscious. You capture on video ONLY the police beating, but NOT the protestor throwing the rock. What would you do? (choose only one and explain briefly).
A) Post the police beating video to your online news site and let the images speak for themselves.
B) Post the police beating video to your online news site along with text explaining that the protestor threw a rock and hit the police officer prior to the incident. But while the police officer was uninjured he responded with baton blows that left the protestor unconscious.
C) Post the police beating video to your online news site along with text explaining the police officer beat the protestor in response to being hit by a rock, but was uninjured and reacted with violence beyond what was necessary to subdue the protestor.
D) Do not post the video because you feel the images may be too graphic, and instead, post a still image of the police beating along with text explaining that the protestor threw a rock and hit the police officer prior to the incident. But while the police officer was uninjured he responded with baton blows that left the protestor unconscious.
E) Post no images of the police beating incident, just non-related photos of the protest but with a text story explaining the full details, before, during and after the police beating incident.
F) Decide this job isn’t for you and turn in your camera and media credentials to your news editor.
