The Departments of Petroleum Engineering, Biomedical Sciences and Mechanical Engineering, in a joint effort, invite applications for a 12-month, post-doctoral research fellow. The initial appointment is for one year and is renewable for a second year, pending annual review of performance and continued availability of funding. The appointment will be full-time and benefitted with a start date of no later than 06/01/2019. The PI (Dr. Ostadhassan) looks for a fellow to perform independent research across multiple areas, such as: (A) the use and development of computational biological tools in microbial genomic-enabled data analysis, (B) anaerobic microbial physiology/biochemistry, and (C) understanding cancer progression from molecular point of view.
The individuals hired will have the opportunity to substantially shape their research direction within the scope of several ongoing projects that are well supported by petroleum industry. We seek creative PhD scientists with a publication track record in the field of microbial and/or phage community analysis, biogeochemistry, or microbial metabolism, metagenomics and bioinformatics, and cancer research. Research areas specifically relevant to this hire include understanding microbiomes, predicting metabolic pathways for unknown species, harnessing microbial metabolism for sulfur generation, and developing metagenomic knowledge of specific microbial organisms.
This is a two-years position funder by UND office of Vice President for Research; however, it can be extended for three to five years of support from petroleum industry in particular.

•        Strong work ethics, ability to work independently and in a team
•        Ability to design experiments and perform experimental methods in the lab
•        Strong management skills to oversight all bio-related research and start new lines of investigations
•        Strong analytical, computational, oral and writing skills
Minimum Qualifications
•        PhD in geo/microbiology, astrobiology, biochemistry, biophysics, microbial ecology, bioinformatics, computer science, soil science, or equivalent areas of research by start date. Official transcripts/verification by primary advisor may be requested at a later date
•        Demonstrated publication record in area of expertise and a record of grant writing
•        Demonstrated research experience with genome or metagenome or analyses
•        Laboratory methods for pathogenic and non-pathogenic diseases
Preferred Job Qualifications
•        Proficient using Unix/linux, python, and R. Capacity to develop software and scripts for microbial bioinformatics
•        Experience cultivating anaerobic microorganisms, with subsequent physiological or biochemical characterization. Specially, individuals with publications in archaeal and bacterial metabolism
•        Experience using omics to query 'wild' viral populations or mobile elements from environmental systems
•        Experience investigating microbial metabolism using 'omics technology including but not limited to: genome analysis, RNA-seq, metabolomics, and/or proteomics
Special Instructions to Applicants
The review of applications for the first hiring round will begin on 03/01/2019. Subsequent reviews of the applicant pool will take place as position becomes available. Candidates should submit 1) cover letter that specifically addresses the candidates existing experience and qualities in the required and preferred job descriptions and 2) A detailed CV 3) contact information of three references that will not be contacted without prior notification of candidates.
