受复旦00师兄qianyi所托,将其llm的申请经验与大家交流,原文如下:

我给复旦的师妹写的一点意见,也贴上来给大家看。

Sorry I was extremely busy this week. So only have time to reply to you at thi
s time. I assume you and other guys in your class are only intending to apply
for LLM. So my response below only address LLM issues.

1. For the grades, I think GPA and TOEFL are both quite important. At least yo
u can not get that low score. But in any events, neither of them would let you
in automatically.

2. Working experience is extremely important. If you have more than two years
fancy WE, you are almost in columbia, nyu and various other top law schools. B
ut for you guys, i think you'd better emphasis other things since you do not h
ave much if any WE.

3. For NYU, i think they recruited about 3 or 4 college graduates. I think whe
ther you are LL.B. or LL.M. in China is not important for NYU (but seems to be
important for some other law schools like Harvard and Michigan). LL.Ms have s
ort of advantage or are more preferable in some law schools since they usually
have more experience, working expereince or academic experience. So just say
what you have and do your best.

4. For papars, I think unless you are really senior academic guy in China, the
y are almost useless, since you can not convince them that you are already sem
i-law professor after graduating from the college. That's against common sense
. But if you want to apply in a academic approach, you should state all releva
nt factors if you have including any piece of papers.

5. For financial aid, some schools do provide money to LL.M. candidate, among
them Harvard, NYU, Michigan, Cornell, Duke have good record in giving money to
Chinese LLMs. But Harvard and Michigan seem to be tough since they generally
recruit those who have already got LLM in China or other countries. But I woul
d like to say don't expect too much. It's true that somebody gets tuition waiv
er or even living expenses, but basically they are somehow pretty smart and al
so rely on their luck.

Some general advice on LL.M. application. I think you should first analyse wha
t you have in your resume. Make a list of your selling points and organize the
m in a coherent way, then state your future plan and reason for LLM study base
d on these points. It's important to support your statement by facts. People t
end to believe guys saying he would become a good cross-border lawyer after th
e LLM ONLY when they see the guy has done some lawyering job and have some sen
se in such career. As far as my knowledge, there might be three basic approach
es for you to organize your selling points: academic approach, lawyer approach
and public service approach. So see which one you can use.

More importantly, i would like to say something about the study law in States.
I strongly recommend you to have some experience and contact in China before
coming to US law school. Please DON'T come only because you think going abroad
is fashionable and cool. It would be a huge mistake and would bring huge cost
. Studying law in US is entirely different from doing a PHD program here. The
law approach is unique and really sophiscated. I cannot fully state it in a fe
w sentence. In brief, you should at least know what you would and could do aft
er the LLM NOW rather than coming here waiting and seeing.

Wish you good luck.

补充
keep in mind a public service PS would not get you in easily if you don't
have strong background in that field. So I always suggest you work on your str
ength, public service or corporate.  Also keep in mind studying corporate law
would not necessarily let you become a corporate lawyer and get the job.

Last but least, if you do not have that strong desire to come here as soon as
possible or other long-term commitment like doing JD here, why not you just wo
rk in Shanghai first. As I said, you would get more resources and aids in your
office. I also could make the guarantee that life in Shanghai is much much mo
re comfortable than life in New York.
