Part 5: Resume & Softs & LOR & Addendum

1.Resume

resume一般分为Education, Honors & Awards, Work Experience, Activities, Skills& Interests五个栏目。

https://scl.cornell.edu/sites/scl/files/documents/2020-21%20Career%20Guide-VD.pdf

https://ocs.yale.edu/channels/resume-samples-tools/

2.Softs

cr. 原作者 redditor r/whistleridge, 原帖链接:https://www.reddit.com/r/lawschooladmissions/comments/660o4h/classifying_softs_and_clarifying_what_is_and_is/

Tier 1 (extremely rare, but do occur - think as few as 1-10 nationwide per cycle, probably no more than 100, most or all will be HYSCCN-level applicants; could alter outcomes as much as 5 additional LSAT points):

●  High decorations for valor in military service (Congressional Medal of Honor, DSC/Navy Cross, Silver Star)

●  Rhodes scholarship

●  Started multimillion-dollar company/innovative service that is household name

●  C-level executive in publicly traded/Fortune500 company

●  Professional athlete/college athlete who was a lock for professional except for injury

●  Widely published author/heavily cited academic

●  Prior high expertise in the field (surgeon who invented technique, etc)

●  URM: Native American, Alaskan Native (on the coasts; less exclusive near inland reservations)

Tier 2 (rare, but not extraordinary - think a few tens to not much more than 1000 per cycle, mostly T14 level applicants, or leading flagship program on full ride in home state; could alter outcomes as much as 3 additional LSAT points):

●  Decorated military service (Purple Heart, Bronze Star)

●  Fulbright/other prestigious scholarship

●  NCAA athlete in standout position, household basketball name, led water polo team to 3 titles, etc

●  Overcome extraordinary physical/mental handicap (ALS, blind & deaf, etc)

●  High level (director, etc) position in prior employment

●  Prior demonstrations of high expertise(patents, etc)

●  URM: all except Native American/Alaskan native (placing URM is tricky because schools have different needs; Native Americans are numerically rarest, so they get a step above, no matter where you place minorities on this scale. Also, Asian is not URM. Such is life.)

Tier 3 (not rare, but not common - a few hundred to a few thousand per cycle, mostly top 50 applicants, will be in the running for scholarships; could alter outcomes as much as 1-2 additional LSATpoints):

●  Commissioned military service

●  Prestigious undergraduate scholarships and/or research awards

●  NCAA athlete

●  Overcame extraordinary adversity (childhood poverty, physical/mental handicap, etc)

●  Published academic

●  Peace Corps/Americorps/another public service

●  Prior employment in the legal field or otherwise pertinent area (engineer for IP, etc)

●  Disadvantaged status: homosexual, first in family to attend college, single working parent, etc.

Tier 4 (common - think thousands per cycle, as almost everyone has at least one. People with these apply to everywhere, including TTTT schools; will not alter outcomes from GPA/LSAT):

●  Any military service

●  Legal internships

●  Congressional internships

●  President/officer of clubs/frat/etc

●  School newspaper/yearbook/etc

●  Honors societies

3.LOR

你的LOR writer写一句“He/She is very passionateabout xxx” 比你自己写 “I’m very interested in xxx”要有力得多。

2 good LOR > 2 good LOR + 1 mediocre LOR,不要让多出来的那一封中规中矩的LOR稀释了你的application的强度

4.Addendum

1.Update

3.Status Checker

Yale/Harvard/Stanford/Columbia/Michigan/Northwestern: Complete以后status checker不再变化,只能等

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1F0eR9BGyM4cdOJNCNzSQz8IMhq48NfF-YiKDi0OdrOw/edit#gid=0

Part 7:

Yale/Stanford/Berkeley:无

Harvard:

Chicago/UVA:

2.面经

https://7sage.com/admissions/lesson/law-school-interviews/

Uchicago
1.Did the epidemic interrupt your works
2.Tell me more about [the research experience]
3.Why law
4.Why Uchicago
5.How do you feel about moving to Chicago
6.Tell me about a challenge
7.What would your classmates say about you after the orientation
8.Question for me

Columbia
1.How is your experience at [your college]
2.Why law
3.Why [your major]
4.Tell me more about [your research]
5.What resources are you going to take advantage of at Columbia to get into your dream career
6.Why are you interested in [in the particular field of law you mentioned in the PS]
7.How would you contribute to our community?
8.Anything not mentioned in apps that wants us to know?
9.Question for me

Duke [
1. Something you’ve been involved in college
2. Why law
3. Why now
4. Anything to add since the submission of your application
5. Questions for me

Cornell
1.Describe an experience where you helped someone else reach their goal. What did you learn from it (video)
2.World Peace through international law is an inspiration that is central to Cornell Law’s education. What major international conflict would you like to participate in as a peacekeeper and why? (written)
3.What’s your favorite book and why? (video)
4.Law school and the legal profession require significant time and energy. What will you do to maintain work/life balance for your personal well-being? (written)
5.Why did you choose your undergraduate school? (video)
6.Autonomous vehicles, more popularly referred to as driverless cars, are no longer science fiction. Who should bear any potential liability in the case of an accident? (written)
7.What are your expectations of a Cornell Law school education? (video)
8.How many hours per week do you spend on social media? (written)
9.How do you define integrity? (written)

1.Why law

2. Why [this school]

Why law in the U.S.

4.KJD: Why now

5. How would you contribute to our community

很多老套路比如“What makes a good student at X Law school?”

“Besides the ABC program on the website,What kind of resources would you recommend students interested in X field of law to take advantage of?”

“Do most X law students live on campus? Is it difficult to find an apartment that is within the walking distance?”

“Is [the community] safe at night?”

“I'm really interested in [the program] but I’m wondering how competitive it is?”

“What’s your favorite misconception about the school?”

Firefox: Will you allow Kira to use your camera and microphone?

Part 8: Waitlist

1.Waitlist

3)Retake the LSAT

4)有resume/LSAT update的话email them

2.LOCI (Letter of Continued Interest)

LOCI guide:https://blog.spiveyconsulting.com/how-to-write-a-letter-of-continued-interest/

1.Merit-based aid

2.Need-based aid

一般来说学校会expect you to take out max loan (在Harvard这个数字是15w刀),然后还不够付的部分用aid来补。 Columbia声称俩name dscholarship是唯一的merit-based aid,但实际上他们的need-based aid给多少是和stats息息相关的且可以negotiate,相当于merit-based aid in disguise,不过一般不会高过Butler(半奖)。

3.loan

5.Scholarship Negotiation

**

Dear Mr. LawSchoolMan,

First and foremost, I am so grateful to XYZ Law School for their offer of admission and generous scholarship offer of $$$$ a year. Studying and practicing law in CITY has always been my dream and I hope to be able to achieve that dream at XYZ.

I am extremely mindful of graduating from law school with debt. Due to the high cost of living in the CITY area, I have been hesitant to submit my seat deposit. XYZ Law School has been my number one choice for law school since I began selecting preferred schools. XYZ's impressive alumni base in the CITY area, excellent externship program, and legal writing courses have impressed me since first learning of the school. However, I have also been accepted and offered full-ride scholarships to the ABC School of Law, DEF School of Law, and a __%scholarship to both GHI School of Lawand JKL School of Law. XYZ is, and always has been, my first choice, but I am faced with a difficult decision. I am writing to inquire whether there is any chance you are able to adjust your offer to be more in line with that which was offered by the aforementioned schools. I understand if you are not able to adjust the scholarship, but please do not hesitate to call or email me with any questions or in need of further information.

Again, thank you so much to XYZ School of Law for the offer of admission and generous scholarship. I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

FutureLawStudentMcScholarship

Good Luck on your cycle:)
