I did apply last year, but I only got offers from SUNY-Albany and U of Conne ct icut. This is either because I really don’t know much about applications or b ecause I didn’t really want to go at that time. I don’t know what they care in the application, activities? (See how naïve I am at that time!) And I don’t know what will be like pursuing Ph.D. at Dept of Biology or Medical school or institutes. So, I didn’t go in the end.
In Feb 2001, I didn’t see that I can get good offers and at the same time, In stitute of Molecular Agrobiology (IMA), a research affiliate of National University of Singapore, was recruiting senior undergraduates for completing thesis at IMA. I didn’t why they should pay my air ticket, pay for the rent and giving us some money just for QING WO MEN QU ZUO LUN WEN!! But, I went, togethe r with 9 students from Fudan, JIAO DA, ZHE DA, BEI NONG, ZHONG SHAN. Later I k
no w that mostly Chinese PIs at IMA asked IMA to do this, for the aim of recruiting Ph.D. students for IMA, since IMA’s Ph.D. seldom comes from a top Chinese University. (As for the IMA, I should point out that it not only works on plants, but many more systems.)
Then, after graduation, we, 7 out of 9 students chose to stay at IMA, either as a Ph.D. student, or as a lab technician. For the institutes I know in Sing apore, they do have contracts, for technician and for Ph.D., and you can leave within the time of the contract without any fine! But, I felt uneasy with being a Ph.D. first, means that you have better pay, better works in a lab, then you LEAVE! So, I choose to work as a lab technician. Then, that’s it! Another year round of application. Now I understand what t he y really care in the applications. Here is just my opinion on bio app:
1. TAO CI is not so important, unless your research experience is exactly the same with PI’s research interest.
2. Recommendations are not important, unless it is from a faculty who know s o ther faculties at the US university and this alone can almost give you the offer.
3. Send out your applications can not only let you know early about your status but also can give you more chances. But, it’s not the decisive factor.
4. RESEARCH! RESEARCH EXPERIENCE! EVEN WITHOUT ANY PUBLICATIONS! IS THE MO ST I MPORTANT EVEN DECISIVE FACTOR! Well, when I had my interview of UCLA at Beijing, the faculty (a Fudan Alumni) told me that, when they see through PKU and SMTH’s app, their research experiences are much stronger than Fudan. That’s mainly the reason for why so fe w

标 题: One year story(3)--Stay in Singapore

Now comes to the final part~ :-)
As for staying in Singapore for one year, it is a good choice. You can earn ov er 1000 USD per month here as a lab technician or Ph.D. So don’t worry about the application fee lo~ However, only if you can find a boss who want a one year contract. I mean, as I mentioned above, you can leave as you wish within the time of contract, but, this will upset the boss and then will do harm to Fudan’s reputation. One th ing keep in mind is that, Singapore is a veryveryvery small country. Governmen t has great power on you. Like, close an institute on one morning without tell ing any one of the institute in advance, any PI can leave suddenly leaving his Ph.D. student at a loss…
As for considering 5 year Ph.D. here in Singapore, another institute of NUS, I nstitute of Molecular Cell Biology (IMCB), it’s a very famous one, almost to p 3 in Asia, lots of US faculties know it. And it surely has great publication s~. And IMCB processes its Ph.D. application throughout the year, so you can a pply anytime you want! And IMCB is rather stable compare to IMA. If you don’t get good offers this year, Don’t get discouraged!!! I used to think that, ok, I am gonna waste one year… Absolutely not! I should say that I have learnt quite a lot in this year.
Learn how to choose labs, how to choose projects, how to deals with blues of l ife, Then try to figure out what’s your own of living, your own way of getting something out of a Ph.D… really a lot~
The end
