7.The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.
"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."
The author of the letter advocated that we should vote for Ann Green rather than Frank Braun in the mayoral election in Clearview. To support his contention, the author listed several reasons mainly referring to the distinct behaviors of the two candidates in environmental aspect. However, under a close look of the author's evidences and reasoning processes, we could find several fallacies which would render the article rather unpersuasive.
To start with, the author points out that the number of factories in Clearview town has doubled during the past years, then rashly conclude that it is the cause of a degenerated air condition and an increased number of respiratory illnesses. Unfortunately, the author is unable to rule out other possibilities may lead to the same consequences. It is entirely possible that the phenomena are resulted from the industrial development of adjacent towns, which could bring the polluted air to Clearview via winds. Or perhaps the air is polluted by car exhausts as the local traffic develops
Secondly, even assuming the construction of factories is the very reason for the polluted environment in Clearview, it's absolutely unfair to speculate Frank Braun is not in favor of environment protection. As we known, he is just a member, not the leader, of the town council. There's much possibility that the policies were made by those who doesn't care about environment yet dominating the council. Thus it would be hard for Frank Braun to apply his positive advocates on environment issues. So if the author wants to prove that Braun is not backing environment protection, he would have to provide more solid evidences such as the voting record of Braun in the town council.
Thirdly, even if Ann Green had won the election and got into office, the environment condition in Clearview will not necessarily be improved, since the author fails to provide any compelling example showing that Green is a leader of capability and credibility. Even given the fact that she is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, her willing to take effective measures to help the local environment is what I still take leave to doubt. It’s entirely possible that the newly elected mayor finally compromised with the owners of the factories, making no positive efforts to the town’s air condition.
To sum up, if the author wants to make his article more credible, he should (1) conduct a elaborate research supporting that the factories are responsible for the worse air condition, (2) provide more evidences showing that Frank Braun is not favorable in protecting environment, and (3) give some telling examples which could prove that Ann Green would make a competent leader.
