The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station.
“Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national
news and less time to weather and local news. During this time period, most of the
complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station’s coverage of weather
and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night
news program have just canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to
attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues,
we should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level.”

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the
argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

From the memorandum, the television station got some complaints from the viewers and the lost advertising revenues of the business because of the replacement of weather and local news for national news during the late night. However, before the analysis and comparison of all the audience complaints, which may still happened in other time periods, and the property of the advertisements, the conclusion of restoring the time to weather and local news to its former level should be delayed.

The most suitable evidence is that the complaints from the viewers may not specific to this time period. Supposing that these viewers are loyal to programs of this tv station and they are very concerned with the local affairs, then they would like to watch the weather and local news all day long instead at only late night. Then, no complaints from them occur. Of course, this hypothesis seems too strict, but we can make another proposal that there are indeed various audiences during this time period with different genders, ages and careers. There are certainly some complains from the tv viewers all the time, whether the increasingly complaints about the national news are so impressive? If the tv station changed the contents of their late-night programs, there will be complaints for other reasons or the audiences of national news during late night will not be contented because they work late at night and their jobs have some connection with the national news such as stock markets. A survey of the late-night programs audiences in details should be done with prediction of possible consequence that the change of the program will bring.

As to the decreased business advertisements contracts, the decision of replacing the national news with the weather and local news is even unreasonable because there is no necessary connection between them. Commonly, the late-night news audiences are adults, specifically, late workers, a candy or doll advertisement will surely not attract their attention even they are international brands, for instance Robbio and Babby. The late-night advertisements of these brands will not have any drawbacks for themselves but have no advantages for their sales and profits. Also the business' own problems should be taken into consideration, as they may have a new market project of retreating from this area or they decided to spend more to get a slice of ads at a crush time. As the coming of the international regression of economy, some business may bankrupt and no more advertising is needed.
