The following is a recommendation from the businessmanager of Monarch Books."Since its opening in Collegeville twenty years ago,Monarch Books has developed a large customer base due to its reader-friendlyatmosphere and wide selection of books on all subjects. Last month, Book andBean, a combination bookstore and coffee shop, announced its intention to opena Collegeville store. Monarch Books should open its own in-store café in thespace currently devoted to children's books. Given recent national census dataindicating a significant decline in the percentage of the population under ageten, sales of children's books are likely to decline. By replacing itschildren's books section with a café, Monarch Books can increase profits andward off competition from Book and Bean."Write a response in which you examine thestated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. The arguer suggest Monarch Books, a book store famous for its reader-friendlyatmosphere and wide selection of books on all subjects, to replace its children’sbook section with a café in order to gain more profits and compete with Bookand Bean, a institution of combination bookstore and coffee shop, who intendsto open its new store in the city of Collegeville. The argument is based on thecensus data that indicates a significant decline in the percentage of thepopulation under age ten, which I doubt to be no enough evidence to guaranteethe outlook of the suggestion.
Firstof all, I choose to doubt the importance the census data hold in the argument.The arguer shows the data to be within a whole nation, which can not indicatethe status of children population in the very city of Collegeville. If thepopulation under age ten in the city doesn’t decline as that of the nation doesor even rises, children’s book section in the store will be enough significantnot to be supplanted. Therefore, a national census is proved not enough tosupport the suggestion.
Admittingthe utility of the data, other points can still be found which weak theargument. There is statement indicates the advantages of Monarch Books thatappeal customers, among which the wide selection of books is a major one. Thearguer should take into consideration the bad influence on the richness ofselection of books caused by replacing children’s book section, which may evenreduce the competitiveness of the store. Customers with children may be turnedaway by the alteration, and the influence may spread to people around them.
Furthermore,the action of adding a café should also be reconsidered. The competitor ofMonarch Books, Book and Bean, is just planning to open its store inCollegeville, so we have no access to the potency of a café in a book store.Considering the name of the city, Collegeville, it gains great possibility thatthe city contains a large number of students as its population, who make great partof potential customs of the book store. As students value time as theirgreatest treasure, most of them will barely waste time having coffee in a café,rather than look for the books they need and purchase them. In this situation,adding a café into Monarch Books may not only make no contribution to appealingcustomers, but even turn them away, reducing the competitiveness of the store ina different way.
Itholds a good will for the arguer to make recommendation to Monarch Books toreplace children’s book section with a café, but with all these concerns above,I suggest to make further investigation and reconsider the recommendation inmore aspects.
