Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed.

From my perspective, educational institutions should not prevent students from majoring in the fields in which it seems difficult for them to achieve success. In my view, as it is hard to anticipate which fields are futureless, educational institutions ought to encourage students to go further in the fields which they are interested in.

Admittedly, none of the educational institutions are able to make the exact predictions that a specific field is too intricate for students to make achievements. All the advice on how to choose pursuing fields origins from specific criterion empirically made by these educational institutions. Hence, such suggestions are inaccurate and are not worth referring. In fact, some fields which seem hard to gain fruit can really lead to success after diligent thought and numerous attempts. Let us take the development of technology as an example. In ancient times, people could only make life necessities by hand. Undoubtedly, manufacturing products automatically should be treated as never achieved at that time. Nevertheless, as many scientists devoted themselves to do research on that field, situations changed as time goes on. Firstly, people learned to raise the production efficiency with the help of natural force, such as wind and river. After the Industrial Revolution, products were accomplished by machines and people only needed to run these machines. With the rapid development of computer science in the 20th century, these machines can be controlled by programs devised in the computer. As a result, such automatically production is achieved after several hundred years of researching. In fact, so many things in the modern society that were treated as unachievable in the past are invented now. For this reason, achievements can be made in those intricate fields after perspiration and educational institutions ought to encourage students to go further in such fields they like.

Furthermore, the fields students should pursue are those where their interests lie, which has nothing to do with whether they are unlikely to succeed or not. As an old proverb says “the interest is the best teacher”, students majoring in their favorite fields will spend more time on such fields. Since they spend more time on those fields, they are likely to gain more. As they gain more, the probability of their success in such fields is increasing simultaneously. As a result, I hold the view that educational institutions should encourage students to pursue fields of what they are interested in.

However, that students can hardly achieve success in the fields which they like but are too intricate are indeed possible. Despite that, students still acquire much in the process of pursuing such fields. Based on what they have gained in the process, they are able to shift to other fields related to the previous field. For their outstanding groundwork gained in the previous field, they are still promising in their newly field. For example, I know many of my friends who major in math plan to specialize in economy after they incept their bachelor degree. As we all know, excellent math knowledge is the prerequisite to do economy research. Hitherto, some economists who majored in math during their undergraduate period have wined the Nobel Prize for Economy. Hence, although students who pursue difficult fields can hardly achieve success, they can transfer to other related fields and continue their struggle for success.

Take all the above into consideration, I hold the view that educational institutions should encourage students to explore in fields which they are really interested rather than dissuade them from pursuing fields in which they seem unlikely to succeed.
