Disagreeing with the author's claim, I think that both one's immediate situation and his/her internal characteristic determine a person's attitude. People's attitude towards things happened around them is such a complicated one that nobody can conclude that which is controlling it, immediate situation or internal characteristic.

To begin with, we must notice that surroundings have such a large effect on our attitudes. We live in a society with our families, friends, and colleagues; and those who we communicate with in the daily life have exerted a subtle influence on us through an unspectacular way. We may do what they do, say what they say, and think what they think. For example, having been with his/her family members for a long time, a person's attitude towards things will be similar with some members in the family; if one's mother is a math teacher, s/he will be interested in mathematical problems when s/he are in the school; if one's father is a businessman, s/he will be curious about business. All these impact on our attitudes are inconspicuous but really exist.

Besides that, according to a theory in psychology, almost everyone has a kind of special psychological characteristics, called group psychology, which means that people would like to do what other people around do. We can easily find such a scene that all the students are sitting silently as a response to a teacher's difficult question, although there are some students who know the answer, because in such a special situation, no one wants to be the first one to stand up, which will make him or her stand out from other students. This phenomenon tells us that what people do is controlled by some immediate situations.

On the other hand, what people express in responding to the same things varies from others, because their internal characteristics are different. People's characteristic is based on their intellectual, morals, and disparate experience form different people. All of these cause the difference between two people when they are in the equal situation in dealing with the same things. Facing the insult as an example, a gentleman may fight back by his wisdom, but an ill-mannered man can only use vulgar language or even violence to express his angry and discontent. Although they are in the same situation, their attitudes determined by internal characteristic towards the things are different.

In sum up, a person's attitude is such an elusive one that neither immediate situation nor internal characteristic can determine it. It is a compound process that both situation and characteristic have affected on it.

当前的情况和人们的内在性格共同决定态度。

从心理学上说,人们会做其他人做的事。

On the other hand, what people express in responding to the same things varies from others, because their internal characteristics are different. People's characteristic is based on their intellectual, morals, and disparate experience form(from) different people. All of these cause the difference between two people(persons) when they are in the equal situation in dealing with the same things. Facing the insult as an example, a gentleman may fight back by his wisdom, but an ill-mannered man can only use vulgar language or even violence to express his angry and discontent. Although they are in the same situation, their attitudes determined by internal characteristic towards the things are different.
内在的个性有影响。

我觉得这篇文章有个大问题就是题目中说的与immediate situations相比较的 the society as a whole 完全没提到。。
感觉是不是偏了。。
