Issue 50 Government officials should rely on their own judgment rather than unquestioningly carry out the will of the people they serve.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.
In democratic world most government officials are selected to speak on behalf of the general public, the question is: What order of decision-making do we stand in if the jugement of government officials are incongruous with the will of people? I do agree with the statement that goverment officials, rather than loyally and courteously yield to the opinions and wishes of the public, should carry out performance and make decesions by themselves.
Admittedly, it is not surprise to see history filled with governments diverting intellectual and financial resourses on programs or actions discouraged by their people. A telling example is the cold war. While the Soviet Union invested a huge sum of money and experts to gurantee its military priority to compete with the westen world, the whole nation stepped into a painful economic stagnation that lasted for more than a decade. Goods began to disappear as the cold war continued. When families had to travel a long distance for daily maintenance like food and clothes, queue for days looking for goods and may still likely to be unable to afford them, any one of them would stick to support the Soviet government from the bottom of their heart? I guess not. What if government officials rely mistakenly on their judgment to run the country machine? The cold war provides a significant lesson to political leaders in our time: The Soviet Union collapsed when the government neglected the well-being of the great many.
But this is not to say that decision-making should be left to the hand of people unquestioningly. Although we might be endowed with right to select eligible, trustworthy government officials, the general public does not equip with appropriate timing or resouces to chart the immediate future course. After the earthquake and tsunami hit the eastern Japan in 11 March 2011, the face-less Japanese prime minister was blamed for slow reaction to evacuate residents near Fkushima nuclear plant, where nuclear accidents were triggered by tsunami. People were furious. Government was said to delay the information of nuclear accidents. But as oridinary people we can not transend to give commands: When one group of people think the situation is not that bad to evacuate millions of people, another might hold the opinion that residents near the nuclear plant should wait no seconds to leave to avoid any possible loss. And there are the third one, as well as the fouth one. In emergency situations such as earthquakes, floods or nuclear accidents where quick decision is highly valued, people are supposed to take more time than government officials to reach concensus. Not to mention the experts from different fields and armed forces with its hard enforcing power, they stay behind government officials and back up their judgement. In one word, government officials should not rely on the opinions of the people they serve, for usually the later takes too long to achieve a justified agreement.
In the end, government officials are better reliant on their own judgment for they can response in time with a more reasonable course of action, which is supported by specialists and armed forces. To aviod wrongdoings of government officials, schemes of supervision should be introduced to assure the proper function of government and the well-being of people. 1# 等待公主归来
