13. Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the students’ field of studyPrimarily, I am in favor of the statement that students should take a variety of courses outside his or her field of study. Since this claim prepares students much better background knowledge as well as broader vision which is of great importance for the future development of them and society. However, various problems arise if it is merely performed as a requirement without concerning students’ will and the consistency of knowledge being taught.
From the perspective of students, courses outside the students’ field of study provide them a opportunity to acquire knowledge that is inaccessible in their routine study which provide them a chance to look at the world in a different point of view, which may facilitate them finding interest in a specified field of study. My friend Martin who majors in Mathematics took a course in Biology with me two years ago which introduce that biological activities, i.g.enzyme activity, measured by different methods can be put together to infer some other activities in the organism which cannot be detected.
He was attracted by this topic and joined a research group which focuses on cellular activity detection and exploited his mathematics background in making models for the measurements which proves very useful in the research. Last year he managed to obtain a PhD position in a biology research group. Thus the extra courses students take offer them much more chances in finding their own interests which one they would like to devote years of hard work and passion, consequently offering them a commencement of a series of upward steps to success.
Offering extra courses benefits not only students but also the whole society as well. Based on extra courses, students maintain a wider range of knowledge therefore hold a wider and profound vision. Since students today are the future of human beings, their vision almost determines the development of the society in the future. Just imagine a world full of people who have limited horizon, little is known out of one’s specified area, communication is harder to deliver, new ideas are harder to be proposed, subsequently the development of society will definitely be hampered. Individuals which constitute the whole society should be familiar with different areas are in desperate need thus courses outside students’ field of study are absolutely necessary and indispensable.
While the significance of these courses are undeniable and even of extreme importance, making these courses in schools as a requirement may bring some side effects since there is no negotiation with students’ will. Just as the tyranny in politics is bound to end, any requirements made ignoring students or unsupported by students will definitely fail. Only by consulting and students and take their advice properly can these courses function appropriately.
In conclusion, although still some problems existing for the courses that students should be required to take, knowledge will never be superfluous, extra courses help students accrue their knowledge as well as enlarge their horizon which advance the whole society. 本帖最后由 sarahchoo 于 2012-10-20 17:13 编辑
