There is great discussion today about thetopic of courses choice of college students. One of the questions under debateis whether requiring college students to take a variety of courses outside theirmajor is the best way to assure that the students become truly educated. Differentpeople have different opinions. As far as I am concerned, it is true thatrequiring the students to take courses outside their major is a good way forthem to become truly educated, but it isn’t true that above method is the bestway for them to become truly educated.
Admittedly, choosing a variety of coursesbeyond their major does good to university students. They could enrich theirmind through learning more knowledge other than field of their study. Forexample, the literary students could strengthen their logic thinking ability bychoosing science courses, and the science students may enhance their aestheticcapability by virtue of taking literary classes. Another, some students may donot have interest to their major, in this case, they could search their trueinterest by taking other courses. However, what the most important thing forcollege students to acquire is critical thinking ability and learning ability, not taking courses as much as possible. So, the above method is not the bestway for students to become truly educated for several reasons listed asfollows.
To begin with, college students have rightto choose their interested courses according to instruction of college. Theyare beyond eighteen years old and they have enough ability to make their owndecisions. They should not be compelled to choose the courses outside theirfield that they never like to study heart and soul. The college have obligation to give suggestion about how to choose courses, butthey do not have right to arrange all courses for students
Also, it is not beneficial to their futurecareer for the students to take more courses outside their major. We all knowthat we live in a competitive world, so the university students have to face fiercejob market after their graduation. They must present the desirable skills andknowledge that the employers want the employees to have in order to look for adecent job. When it comes to choosing courses, undoubtedly, they should takeand focus on the major courses which do good their future job and meet therequirement of job market. Another, the university fees an tuitions areincreasing year by year, so studying in university is a strong economic burdento students and their parents. Taking more courses implies more fees andtuitions and surely increases their burden. It may also increase studyingpressure of students, even do harm to their health for they will spend moretime on study at the expense of physical exercises. Moreover, if university studentstake a variety of courses beyond their field, they will spend more time andenergy to the additional course, so they have no time to deep into the corecourse that are favorable to their job hunting.
To sum up, from what has been discussedabove, we may safely draw the conclusion that requiring university students totake courses beyond their major is not the best way for them to become trulyeducated because it will do harm to their health and future career and becausecritical thinking and learning, not taking more courses, is the most importantthing for college students.
