Do you want success? I guess most people would say “yes”. It makes one feel great with tons of people regard you as an exemplar. But what is success? Some people hold the view that true success should be something that can be measured primarily in terms of the goals one sets for oneself. It sounds like that it makes sense. However, take a close look at the opinion, you will find it fallacious and not well grounded. Let’s have a simple example. Bill sets a goal of killing the ex-girlfriend who had dumped him for his poverty. Will you think he is a successful man if he “achieves” the goal that he sets for himself? Now you can see what I want to talk about.
Success cannot be measured. Things can be measured, unless there is a very clear standard. We cannot define a standard for success, because there is not at all. Genius like Edison, who invented so many necessities for humanity such as bulbs, telephone, faxing and so on, will be definitely regarded as successful contributor for the whole social process. If Edison never made invention a important goal in his life, does that mean he is not successful? That is not logical. Newton was successful scientist for the discovery of gravity. Michel Jackson was successful for his contribution to the music circle. Michel Jordan is successful for his incredible basketball skills. Madam Curie was Successful for her diligent work and noble virtues. Many great people are considered as successful because they all made huge contribution, which is too far-reaching and too profound to be measured, to the humanity or the whole society. Can you say that their successes can be measured by their previously set goals? I bet most of them never thought about the influence they had made.
Though some people do set goals in their life, are their successes related to the extent of the goals? No, absolutely no. Sang Lan, who fell off in the Olympic Games, has been paralyzing for the rest of her life. Though her dream for gold will never come true, nobody dare to think her a loser. People respect the hard work and unbreakable will one demonstrates in the process rather than the glory of the success itself. Anyway, the goals one set are not always proper, sometimes too high, sometimes too low, sometimes right, sometimes even wrong. The extreme instance I refer in the very beginning fully indicates the fallaciousness of the proposed point. People who achieve the wrong goals through illegal means should never be regarded as success. If success can be measured in terms of the goals one sets, that will lead to the theory that every criminal in prison, who had a clear plan for his crime and finally succeeded, should be successful person, with his goal being achieved. That is insane.
Then what is success? Some people ask. Amy Sky once sang to his son. Six weeks you learned to smile, three months, you learned to crawl, one year you learned to utter, three years you have your first friend, six years you learned to ride…these ordinary miracles, ordinary miracle that I will always remember. Miracles can also been these small and ordinary things due to their special meaning to someone. Common people can achieve success as long as their behavior and spirits win others’ repect.
