22) According to a recent report, cheating among college and university students is on the rise. However, Groveton College has successfully reduced student cheating by adopting an honor code, which calls for students to agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors and to notify a faculty member if they suspect that others have cheated. Groveton's honor code replaced a system in which teachers closely monitored students; under that system, teachers reported an average of thirty cases of cheating per year. In the first year the honor code was in place, students reported twenty-one cases of cheating; five years later, this figure had dropped to fourteen. Moreover, in a recent survey, a majority of Groveton students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without. Thus, all colleges and universities should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's in order to decrease cheating among students.

Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.

In this argument, the writer recommends all colleges and universities to adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's for decreasing cheating among students. Based on the evidences that students of Groveton cheated less year by year according to teachers' reports and a recent survey concerning a majority of Groveton students saying their less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without, it seems that the measure of adopting honor codes is effective so that it is reasonable to take the measure at first glance, however, some questions need to be answered as follows.

In the first place, can the evidence according to teachers' reports concerning the numbers of students cheating less year by year in their academic endeavors really prove that the measure is effective in Groveton? It is doubtful. Since it is possible that teachers did not discover some students' cheating behavior, and maybe teachers were partial with students who wanted to keep up with their high scores... Thus all these factors lead to the reports' unconvincing to prove that the measure is effective. Even if the measure is really effective now, no one can guarantee that the measure would be always effective in the future.

In the second place, the writer seems to assume that adopting honor code is really adaptive even from the students' view according to a recent survey that most students saying they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code. However, can the survey really reflect that even the students
support the measure? It is possible that most students in the survey did not say what they really want to express since they might be afraid to tell the truth due to teachers' pressure. And maybe most students in the survey are originally honest that they would be honest in the exams originally.

Finally, even if the measure of adopting honor codes is really effective in Groveton, is it necessarily that it will be also effective in other colleges and universities? I am afraid not. It is possible that students in Groveton are generally honest, and only if they agreed on the honor code, they would less likely to cheat, however, in other colleges and universities whose students may be generally revolt, and they may fed up with the measure so that the result may be more students would cheat in their academic endeavors.

In conclusion, can the teachers' reports concerning numbers of students' cheating substantiate that the measure of adopting the honor codes is effective in Groveton? Whether the recent survey relating to the
major students' saying about less likely to cheat with an honor code is persuasive that the measure is adaptive? Who can guarantee that the measure would be effective in other colleges and universities? The answers to these questions above lead this recommendation to an unconvincing one.
