35) The following appeared in a letter from the owner of the Sunnyside Towers apartment complex to its manager. One month ago, all the showerheads in the first three buildings of the Sunnyside Towers complex were modified to restrict maximum water flow to one-third of what it used to be. Although actual readings of water usage before and after the adjustment are not yet available, the change will obviously result in a considerable savings for Sunnyside Corporation, since the corporation must pay for water each month. Except for a few complaints about low water pressure, no problems with showers have been reported since the adjustment. I predict that modifying showerheads to restrict water flow throughout all twelve buildings in the Sunnyside Towers complex will increase our profits even more dramatically.
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the prediction and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the prediction.
In this letter, the writer makes a predication that modifying showerheads to restrict water flow throughout all twelve buildings in the Sunnyside Towers complex will increase their profits. Based on assumptions that modifying all the showerheads in the first three buildings of the Sunnyside Towers complex will bring a considerable savings in water fees for Sunnyside Corporation and there are only a few complaints about low water pressure, the writer makes such a predication. Although it seems reasonable at first glance, some following questions need to be answered.
In the first place, the writer seems to assume that modifying the showerheads to restrict water would save water fees, thus the predication that Sunnyside Corporation will increase their profits by modifying all the showerheads seems reasonable. However, would it really save water fees to modify the showerheads? It is questionable. We cannot role out the possibility that the water usage would increase given that not knowing the actual readings of water usage. It is possible that after modifying the showerheads, because of small
water flow, people have to use water longer, then it doesn't necessarily that the water usage would decrease, thus water fees would not necessarily decrease and the Sunnyside Corporation would not necessarily get a considerable savings in water fees.
In the second place, the writer assumes that it is necessary to pay attention to a few complaints about low water pressure and based on no report about any problems with showers from the adjustmental, it is appliable to modify all the showerheads which the writer thinks it would be profitable. However, is it really no problem to modify showerheads throughout all twelve buildings? I'm afraid not. As is known, the higher places, the higher requirement for high water pressure the consumers have. Only modifying the first buildings, there are a few complaints. It is possible if modifying all twelve buildings, there may be numerous complaints and consumers' discontent may have a negative effect for the image of Sunnyside Corporation which may affect their making profits.
Finally, even if modifying showerheads is appliable and may bring a considerable savings in water fees to Sunnyside Corporation, whether will it increase their profits or not? The main profit they can make depends on numbers of buildings they can sell and it is only a small part of cost to pay for water since there are many other kinds of cost they should pay for such as property management fees, thus it is unreasonable to predict that modifying showerheads throughout all twelve buildings would increase their profits.
In conclusion, will it really bring a considerable savings to modify all showerheads? Is it appliable to modify all showerheads ignoring those complaints? Will it really largely determine the profits even if it can bring a considerable savings and it is appliable? Answers to these questions above lead this predication to a ridiculous one.
