9.    Nature's Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products, is opening its next franchise in the town of Plainsville. The store should prove to be very successful: Nature's Way franchises tend to be most profitable in areas where residents lead healthy lives, and clearly Plainsville is such an area. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. Finally, Plainsville's schoolchildren represent a new generation of potential customers: these schoolchildren are required to participate in a fitness-for-life program, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age.
9.

In the memorandum above, the author concludes that NW’s next store in the town of P must be very successful. In order to corroborate his inference, the author cites a merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. Besides the report, he finds that the local health club has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. He also points out that P’s children who are required to participate in a fitness-for-life program will bring profits to them. Taking a glance at the argument, we find that it seems to be logical. But having an insight into it, we can easily find how flimsy the argument is.

At the beginning, the author cites a report from merchants that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs which shows residents in P lead healthy lives. We had no idea what the sales in the past and now. Though the sales are at totally highs, we cannot guarantee that the store will be successful. It is possible that the residents just like wearing running shoes and exercise clothing and they even don’t live in a healthy way. Also they only buy them as presents for their friends and families. Additionally, the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. It doesn’t mean the total number of the residents who go to the classes is large. It is likely the scale of classes is so small that it doesn’t satisfy the requirements of residents. Overall, without ruling out all possible circumstances, the memorandum is still dubious.Furthermore, even if residents of P lead healthy lives actually, we cannot come to a conclusion abruptly that the store must be successful. Nature's Way franchises tend to be most profitable in areas where residents lead healthy lives. The author fails to compare the situations among those cities. Their stores can be very popular in other cities except in P, because common sense instructs us that the consuming capacity in a district is limited. it is possible that the residents’ consuming capacity has already come to the crest and they have no money to buy health food at all. Also, in P, there have already been other similar stores, the market of health food has been full. Or perhaps they believe they are fit as result of some exercises and they don’t need health food. In short, the author fails to substantiate his assertion. Moreover, even the evidences above are credible, the author’s assertion that Plainsville's schoolchildren represent a new generation of potential customers cannot convince me. As we all know, many years must pass before these children will be old enough to consume health food. Their habits might change a lot as time went on. Additionally, they may hate the imposed fitness-for-life program and they will stand for unhealthy live styles. In sum, unless the author provide valid evidences, the conclusion cannot be drawn. In sum, the author should list sufficient evidence to make the argument convincing. To access better, he should analyze the prospective consumers and the possible profit they can earn..
